  2. Can lower speed limits save lives on Europe’s roads?

From Paris to Stuttgart, cities are hitting the brakes on speed in an effort to save lives.

Could this be the key to reaching zero road deaths in the EU by 2050?

  3. Summary of new California #transportation laws for 2026 is on pages 11-12 of Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s Bike and Pedestrian Facilities Advisory Committee meeting packet for Feb: tamcmonterey.org/files/e73eb70

    Among the new laws:
    AB 382 (Berman) – #Pedestrian safety: #SchoolZones: #SpeedLimits

    SB 671 (Cervantes) – #PedestrianCrossing signals

AB 875 (Murasutchi) – Vehicle removal — In part, "grants law enforcement authority to #impound certain noncompliant electric vehicles. Officers may remove electric vehicles with fewer than four wheels that exceed legal #speed thresholds and do not qualify as #ebikes, as well as Class 3 e-bikes operated

  4. Speed limits are among the concepts that are never just matters of fact.

  5. The weird thing about driving in Ireland is that everyone drives *under* the speed limit. I was on one of the big motorways, speed limit 120km/h, and most drivers were going around 85-90, even under perfect driving conditions.

Then I got onto a country road, and maybe I understand why.

Imagine driving for hours on in a lane barely wider than your tiny car, with no shoulder — just a stone wall or hedgerow immediately beside your. And the road twists and makes sharp turns, so you never know when a camper van or lorry or bus will be suddenly upon you in the oncoming lane, encroaching your side of the road.

And the speed limit? 80kmph. Sometime 100. If anyone actually drove the speed limit on those roads, they’d die within minutes.

  6. theguardian.com/commentisfree/ #TrafficCalming “Take speed limits. Rigorous new research published by Transport for London shows the number of people killed or seriously injured on London borough roads reduced by 34% following the implementation of 20mph #speedlimits, with the number of children killed falling by 75% (from four to one). That means fewer grieving families and fewer people’s lives made a misery. (1/3)

  7. I'm both impressed and slightly unnerved with how quickly I got used to the extra power of the #VW #GolfGTI - within a week of getting it it felt to some extent like "an ordinary #car" from inside during normal driving (unless I put my foot down, when the performance becomes immediately obvious. I suspect this is also why it has the #Soundaktor with artificial engine noise..)

I'm glad I only started #driving in #middleage - as I'm not so tempted to be leadfooted, being aware of the consequences, both #roadsafety related and the #law (#speedlimits are enforced strictly here with #ANPR #cameras, with #fines for more egregious offences proportional to income), but I can see how #carCulture encourages young lads to go faster than they should (sometimes with unfortunate results)

  8. 20mph speed limits save lives. Research from London:

"Child casualties dropped by 46%, and children killed by 75%"

20mph = Fewer maimed and dead children.

    Difficult to argue with that.

  9. Proactive road safety improvements before school starts?

Nuneaton has a lot of residential development going on, and one of the newest sites is seeing a brand new secondary school being built, set to open its doors for its first cohort of Year Sevens in September this year. All very exciting – except for the nearby main road which remains at its historical 40mph limit. Will the County Council entertain dropping the maximum speed down to 30mph?

#Wales - First #20mph year sees 100 fewer killed or badly hurt

    David Deans, January 31, 2025

"The first year of a controversial Welsh speed limit saw around 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured on 20 and 30mph roads, ministers have said.

"New casualty data for the first year of the 20mph limit was welcomed by the Welsh government, while the Labour politician who spearheaded the policy said it showed it was 'the most successful road safety intervention in modern times'.

"The figures showed the number of people hurt fell by 28% compared with the same period the year before, with ten fewer dead.

"The number of casualties on 20 to 30mph roads between July and September 2024 was also the lowest for the three month-period since records began in 1979.

"Amid longstanding rows over the speed limit within his own party, former transport minister Lee Waters urged others not to undermine the scheme."

"California Speed Trap Law requires the city to survey the prevailing speeds on classified streets every seven years in order to keep speed limits radar enforceable. The speed limits are set based on the average flow of traffic, within five miles per hour of the 85th percentile speed. According to the memo from the city traffic engineers, the results of the study indicated the posted speed limit must be raised….The logic of the law was hard for the board to understand, as the majority believed speed limits should be based on safety, not how fast people are driving.”

  12. #YoGo is eyeing cities such as #Oxford for experimental launches of their #electric golf buggy thingy: theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/j it kind of amuses me that we're always among the guinea pigs for transport experiments. While I wouldn't want to drive one of these, I see them as a useful tool for enforcing the #20mph #speedLimits. #transport #sustainability #ClimateCatastrophe

  13. “UK’s 20mph speed limits ‘are cutting car insurance costs’.” Because fewer children are being killed and seriously injured. But of course it’s the cost of insurance for motorists that’s important. #Traffic #SpeedLimits

  14. Folk on #UK #car / #motoring forums are going apeshit about plans by #Scotland plans to reduce #SpeedLimits for smaller #cars on single-carriageway #roads (but to increase them for #lorries / #HGV to the same limits as #England )

I suspect a lot of these #drivers have got used to treating rural roads as their personal racetrack, and are annoyed that #PoliceScotland may be taking more action against #speeding

  15. @Alex_Verbeek ... it's #UsThePeople, too. Majorities are simply not going to vote for a party telling them to stop eating meat, stop flying around the globe, and stop subsidies for the #OilAndGasIndustry so gas at the pump will become more expensive... At least in democracies politicians must win votes to govern.
We are were we are, because this is what the majority of people wanted .. whether it's #Christofascism or #Speedlimits on the Autobahn... Accountability starts with everyone of us! #WeAreIt

  16. CW: Variable speed limits

I honestly can't see what the problem is with variable speed limits. Maybe if they change at a spot depending on the time of day; that could be a bit confusing. That seems to be the old plan from Labour and maybe they should have set a permanent slower speed by schools.

I've driven in New South Wales and the speed limit varies near schools: 60kmph through the main road in town and slowing down to 40kmph around the school. If a tourist like me can figure it out, the locals should be able to do it safely.

"This week, consultation opened on a government proposal to increase the speed limit to 110km/h on a portion of Christchurch’s Southern Motorway.
    ...
... the most important detail of all: this change could shave up to 49 seconds off this Christchurch commute.

  19. As the NZ Government continues to get things undone, like reversing reduced #SpeedLimits on local streets, here's some evidence for Minister of Regulation David Seymour. This systematic review of 70 papers finds that:

...30 km/h speed limits in European cities demonstrated a 23%, 37%, and 38% reduction in road crashes, fatalities, and injuries, respectively.
