There's also the case where you live in a place that doesn't have a large enough population to support a specialty seller of some sort. My city used to have two different electronics supply houses (which exist mainly to serve the trades, but they'll usually tolerate hobbyists coming in to buy stuff), but that was many years ago, when there were still tons of local repair shops fixing microwaves and TVs and stereos and everything else, so there was lots of demand for electronic components and supplies.

Most of those things are now treated as disposable items. The repair shops are long gone. There's not enough demand in my city - actually, in my whole province - to support such a supply house.

So hobbyists and people who still do repairs have to order from somewhere. The closest "local" supply house is in a city that's a 7-hour drive away. So I can order from them - but it's a pain, because they don't have any way to see their stocklist or order online. It's "phone them and hope they're not too busy to tell you which of these 17 diode models they happen to have in stock".

Or I can go online and order from Newark/Element14/Farnell (all the same company), or DigiKey, or Mouser, or Amazon, or Ebay, or AliExpress. And all of these will be cheaper as well as more convenient.

"Shop local" just ain't possible for all things if you don't live in a city like NYC or London or Frankfurt etc.

It is impractical for large numbers of people.

I live in the prairies. There are two "large" cities in my province, each about 250,000 people. Neither of these cities is large enough to have a lot of #specialty retailers - for example, there's no electronics supply house in my city.

It's a 7-hour drive to the nearest city that does have such a supplier.

*Lots* of people have very different #circumstances than you. Try not to order us to live like you can.

  26. Dear Friends of seven swans, 🦞
    Yesterday the seven
#signets on #Tooting Common were still #swimming with their parents. #Daddy swan was with the #toughest/largest and the other six were with their #Ma. Will they all make it? Well #nature is tough. Swans are #delicious, like crispy duck no doubt to quite a few felons/predators. As a #commoner and #pleb they are not on my shopping list. :ablobcatpopcorn:

A flock of swans flying sounds like a UFO or whatever they are called now. UAP? Crop Circus
    #Fakery? #Special #effects of the bird/third kind?

In the UK, only Q (Queen
#Camel and guests) are allowed to eat the Royal #Mail, White Swans etc and provide a franchised product #endorsement. Fortnum & #Mason is their #delivery #nub.

Black swans are rarer and may be exempt from Regal
    #gnashers.

Some farmers in the UK are
    #rearing #ostriches but that is a #specialty.

Have a great day. Look around.

  27. The New York attorney general’s office has asked a judge to 💥void the $175 million bond former President Trump secured💥 to put off paying the larger monetary damage award in his civil fraud case.

State lawyers said in court filings Friday that the former president and his co-defendants
    — the Trump Organization and its top executives, including his two eldest sons
    — failed to prove the surety Trump used to obtain the bond actually has the money to back it.

They also say the defendants did not show that “sufficiently secure and ascertainable” collateral backs the bond.

“Based on the foregoing, the People respectfully request that the Court deny Movants’ motion to justify the surety, declare the Bond to be without effect and order that any replacement bond be posted within seven days, along with such other and further relief the Court deems necessary and appropriate,” lawyers with New York Attorney General Letitia James’s (D) office wrote in a 26-page filing.

    Trump’s bond was secured by the California-based #Knight #Specialty #Insurance Company.

State lawyers argued Knight is a “small insurer that is not authorized to write business in New York” and, until Trump, had “never before written a surety bond in New York.”

The company has a total policyholder surplus of just $138 million, the filing says.

Under New York state law, companies like Knight can’t expose themselves to liabilities
    — like a bond
    — or any potential loss greater than 10 percent of their surplus.

“Based on KSIC’s policyholder surplus in its most recent annual financial statement of $138,441,671, the limitation of loss on any one risk that KSIC is permitted to write is $13.8 million,” the lawyers wrote.

“The face amount of the bond exceeds this limitation by $161.2 million.”

The state also argued that because Trump still has access to the $175 million in cash he placed in an account as collateral,
the court should find that he and his codefendants “failed to meet their burden to demonstrate that the Bond is ‘sufficiently collateralized by identifiable assets.'”

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled earlier this year that Trump, the Trump Organization and top executives conspired to alter Trump’s net worth for tax and insurance benefits. He ordered them to pay a combined $464 million, plus interest.

Trump’s bond ensures that James’s office can’t collect the multimillion-dollar judgment against the defendants while they appeal and pauses other penalties.

The bond amount was originally set at the full judgment amount, but an appeals panel agreed to lower the price when Trump’s lawyers said it would be “impossible” for the former president to secure a full bond.

  28. The California auto loan king behind Donald Trump’s $175m bond to stave collections while he appeals a $454m civil fraud judgment has said he was “happy to do it”.
#Don #Hankey, chairman and majority shareholder of #Knight #Specialty #Insurance, told CNN that his underwriting of Trump’s loan was “what we do”.
“I’m happy to do it. We would have done it for anybody else,” the 80-year-old said. “It was an easy transaction. It was put together very quickly.”

The bond filing to the court came three days ahead of a deadline on Trump and his company imposed by a New York appeals court.
Hankey told the network that Knight Specialty Insurance Company used a combination of cash and investment-grade bonds to pay the fee.

Hankey noted to CNN and other outlets that his company had initiated the deal,
reaching out to Trump before the appeals court reduced the amount the former president would have to pay while his appeal was heard.

The billionaire, who the network reported is worth more than $7.4bn, also confirmed to Forbes that he and his wife, as well as their two sons, supported Trump’s past political campaigns and would do so again.
“I’d never met Donald Trump,” he told Forbes. “I’d never talked to him on the phone. I heard that he needed a loan or a bond, and this is what we do. So, we reached out, and he responded.”
The $175m bond holds the New York attorney general, Letitia James, at bay while Trump takes the judgment to appeal. James said as the initial deadline approached last month that she was ready to start seizing properties

  30. A modest proposal for my #USA friends, regarding the problems with your H-1B visa program...

H-1B is important for #STEM fields, but has been rife with #abuse. It's supposed to be for #workers with #specialty #knowledge and #skills, which cannot be filled with a #US worker. Shady #employers and #contract agencies bring in cheaper foreign workers claiming they "can't find" US workers for those jobs.
