currently going through all stages of grief for the time wasted on fixing all these 300 or so C# crashes in #SparkleShare over the years (and these are the reported cases). most of which could have been caught at compile time.
I don't think I want ever again to write anything without a compiler that tells me my code is shit in advance. #Rust

bunch more integration tests done!
I also made it so that you can just straight up:
```
cd folder
twinkle init <URL>
twinkle sync
```all your stuff into an existing repo that already has data. `git merge --allow-unrelated-histories` doing all the heavy lifting. :)

the last time there was a #SparkleShare community channel was years ago on IRC and it was pretty active.
started a modern version on Matrix. but I'm all alone there. so join me. :)
-
finally done. affected like a 1000 lines in the end. 🥵
I've also added simple version detection for when Git 3.0 comes around later this year and breaks a few things.
specially with the addition of the CLI this is more important as I can't control the bundle.

oh yea! rename parsing working. was easier than I initially thought thanks to iter().next().
-
I've been refactoring #SparkleShare's #Git wrapper internals to use #Rust's OsStr everywhere instead of lossy UTF-8 strings. it's a lot of work
it's more correct, but this doesn't really matter except for a bunch of edge cases where newlines are used in file paths. possibly it could make a Windows port easier.
but now that I'm aware of it I can't not do it... learning a lot though.

*tap tap* is this thing on? I'm going to do a LinkedIn... 😎
I'm happy to announce that the #SparkleShare project will receive a grant from the @nlnet @NGIZero fund!

hehe, I found this "one weird trick" that doubled internal github.com traffic to the #SparkleShare repo.
🥁 :
add a social media banner in Settings.
you'll stand out on the #GitHub Topics pages where hardly anyone does this.
(does require you have a bunch of initial stars)

I’m looking for testers for #SparkleShare’s new CLI mode!
all you need is an empty git repository and to follow the instructions in the readme.
all feedback welcome. 🙏

finally done. estimates are not my strength to say the least... 😅

on the outside it's pretty though, that's what matters right? :P
-
it took me the whole day, but integration tests for clone/init/sync are working. 😌
the `gh` cli tool made it a lot less painful. also discovered a bug that I wouldn't have found for a long time otherwise, so it's already worth it!

it's not fun, but I really need to create some integration tests at this point...
today I did one of those "this can't possible break" one-liners which then caused an infinite loop. :\
posting this to keep myself accountable.

notifications.

been also rewriting #SparkleShare's notification service in #Rust.
it allows clients to instantly notify each other of changes, since ssh/git polling is heavy and slow. also using HTTPS, though no private data is sent.
using #WebSockets this time, so users can write integrations in the browser!
-
ok! it was a fever dream week of rushed readme-driven #Rust development, but finally I have something for you all to test out. :)
the new #SparkleShare CLI codenamed Twinkle:
-
the GUI always handled key management to be more user friendly.
I've ripped that out here and assuming that if you want to use this you know your way around ssh-keygen/agent.
-
distilled it down to this.
also headless so you can use it on servers, which has been a popular community request.
-
spent the whole day writing the README.md for the #SparkleShare command line mode.
writing down how I want the flows to work first exposed several flaws in my thinking. and now I have a better picture of what the design should be.
now to do the code adjustments (luckily it's not much :)
-
got the weekly app icon cadence of an icon a week kind of down I think. filled the project slots until August.
now time to give #SparkleShare some love this summer as the main project. I've got big small plans. :)

-
@vixalientoots @FineFindus this would be perfect if I can store them in a folder and sync with the upcoming #SparkleShare rewrite. :)
-
I will post more details about my plans soon.
meanwhile I’m working on getting Auroras out the door, improve Bobby, and in spring tackle the big fish: port #SparkleShare to #Rust and the modern #GNOME stack.
❤️
-
alright, almost got the backend for the #SparkleShare #Rust port working.
part for part, the Rust code is a lot more compact, robust, and easier to understand.
did drop some features that just too hacky to keep supporting (client-side encryption) but also added commit signing and per-server keys.
GTK UI next! but first I need to build a computer that can run Linux well natively. :)
-
I think I have a plan for #SparkleShare. I've been playing with #rust:
+ it's not C or C#
+ #gnome bindings look well maintained. it's even in the kernel.
+ want to learn something new- it's just weird
after doing some C stuff on #GameBoy/#NES I realise my C# code is a mess. but the algorithm and years of edge case knowledge can be salvaged.

SparkleShare project is coming to a close with version 3.38.1. The maintainer welcomes anyone to fork and rebrand the project.
-
not sure what to do with #SparkleShare. 😕
it needs a bugfix release, but I don’t have the energy. can’t even set up a working build environment because of bit rot.
VS Mac and Xamarin.Mac are dead. I’ve no interest in touching Windows. CI is broken due to binary deps gone missing.
might go Linux-only and apply to GNOME Circle. flatpak seems to still work. sadly the gtksharp bindings are out of date so it can’t progress. rewrite in a different language?
feeling the maintainer fatigue. 😣
