I have a love-hate relationship with Anki.
I've been using it for ages. If I look on my file system, the oldest Anki related file that I have is from 2008... and I'm sure I started using it before this.
I love Anki's repetition method.
I hate its drill sergeant mentality.
"What? You *think* you little worm can go on vacation? Wait until you come back. I'm going to have you do a marathon 24-hour session, maggot!"
😩
"What are you talking about, man? You just don't get the Anki philosophy, man!"
No, I do get it.
I think the return on investment is the best when you are a rank beginner.
Recently I've given up using those sophisticated Spanish decks. First, they all contain mistakes, some worse than others, and there's the problem of synonyms. The more complex the idea expressed by a sentence, the more ways there are to express it. In English, think about the difference between "he hit me in the face" and "he punched me in the face." In most situations, these mean exactly the same thing.
I'm still using Anki for Spanish, but it is in a reduced capacity. I have a deck for conjugations that I created from a database, and I have a deck of "useful expression," also created by me. That's it.
My main Spanish practice now is to listen to songs in Spanish. I go over the lyrics. I make notes about those expressions I don't readily understand, and I listen to the songs over and over.
I expect I'm going to start a musical thread in the fediverse, in Spanish of course, about the songs that I pick. I'll edit this message with a link when I do this.

Musical Interlude: A random thought brought this wonderful song to mind...a Spanish-language hit from the 70s, it's a passionate love song declaring that the subject is all that gives the singer life and hope. It's a gloriously primal song...but just a damn good song even if you don't understand the words.
"Eres Tú," performed by Mocedades.

The amount of badly translated to Spanish interfaces I see online is very high. The translation of "open" as in "to open" is "abrir", not "abierto", and so on (my mail service is asking me if I want to "vacío" my spam folder). I guess most companies machine-translate everything nowadays and don’t pay anyone to check afterwards, even for the most basic things. #translation #machineTranslation #ux #ui #spanish #spanishLanguage

My Journey into Spanish
Learning Spanish: As a beginner, I’ve been primarily using Duolingo and occasionally Dots for a change in pace. I’m eventually planning to transition more to Babbel, and when I’m more comfortable with vocabulary and basic grammar, I’m planning to go to Pimsleur (will also look more into Memrise and Teuida as well.)

I decided to improve my Spanish, yes.
But I'm doing it on Hard Mode.
The custom flashcards that I create are English-Spanish. Oftentimes, it would be so much easier to have them be French-Spanish.
Those who know French and Spanish will tell you that the two are much closer together than English is to either of them.

I've watched the first two episodes of Bandidos.
Pros:
* The subtitles are following the Spanish rather closely compared to other things I've watched. That's a major plus.
* I'm not bored.
Cons:
* It is full of plot holes.
* The guys that are staffing the security at the museum in the first episode would put Stormtroopers to shame with their stupidity.

Around these here parts, we say:
I'd like the check.
In French, we can say:
Je voudrais l'addition.
In Spanish, I have:
Me gustaría la factura.
(Note that in French, we can also say la facture instead of l'addition.)
Why can't we agree on what to call that slip of paper?

CW: lewd Spanish flashcard
Ok, so, last night in bed I was thinking, I'd ask Google to translate to Spanish:
I’m going to eat your pussy,
and then it would say something akin to, "I'm going to eat your cat." Ha ha! Right?
I did it just now and did get the accurate translation:
Voy a comerte el coño.
Joke's on me, I guess.
Though, this is a new flashcard in my set of flashcards.
Can't let a good translation go to waste. :madjoy:

Okay... so I was on the verge of being fluent in Spanish during my teens.
Then I did not use it for a number of years.
Then my brother got married in Mexico. So I learned enough, for travel. I remember asking our taxi driver "Es posible comer en el coche?"
Then I did not use it for a number of years.
Now, I can utter some word, but sentences are difficult. It is pitiful.
Does anyone have references to TV shows in Spanish that are hopefully not too sucky. I've just put on a telenovela and within 5 seconds I was laughing at it, not with it.
For the record, I used Friends to polish my English.
It would be preferable if the accent and vocabulary is one I'm likely to encounter in the US.

I love how the logo of the recent Manila Spanish Film Festival organized by the #InstitutoCervantes leans into how #Tagalog has nearly ⅓ of its vocabulary coming from Spanish, including the key word “pelikula” from “película”. Even the other “film” loanword “sine” comes from “cine”. (Interestingly, the word “sinehan”, for “theater” or “movie house”, combines the Spanish loanword with the locative Tagalog suffix “-an”.)
