"Violin and Guitar," Juan Gris, 1913.

Gris (1887-1927) remains the only Cubist I'll go out of my way for. His use of color, and the clarity of his line, even though it's distorted, appeal to me. I've heard his style called "Crystal Cubism" which seems right to me. I get a haunting sense that if I just look at his work from the correct angle, it will all come together.

Despite the jumble of images, I can see this is a violin and guitar, on a table covered with a red checked tablecloth. A wallpapered backdrop, with a window, are behind it. There's also a bottle and maybe a roll of paper. Some Cubists seem to be projecting their middle finger at the viewer, while Gris seems to be earnestly communicating....but just in his own visual language.

Ill health took him at 40, and he never moved on from Cubism, but his legacy is a strong one.

"The Old Faun," Santiago Rusiñol, 1911.

Rusiñol (1861-1931) was a leader of the Catalan "Modernisme" movement, which pushed for a unique artistic voice for Spain's Catalonia region. He was also a poet, journalist, and playwright.

Born into a textile manufacturing family, he married young but abandoned his family and children to study art, a rift that lasted over a decade. His family generously took him back in so he could cope with a morphine addiction, and then later became a mainstay of Barcelona's art world.

This is one of many paintings he did of beautiful scenery in Spain. This, for instance, is of the royal gardens in the town of Aranjuez, at the time a neglected community. Now it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"The Young Decadent. After the Ball," Ramon Casas, 1899.

This young lady seems a bit tired, but look closer. She's reading a book with a yellow cover, a sort of code that it's by a Decadent or sinful author. The Yellow Book was a periodical that featured Decadent writing. Yellow became associated with pulpy or extreme writing; in Italy there's a whole genre of slasher films called "giallo" or "yellow" with the same association.

"Parisian Boulevard," Ramon Pichot i Gironès, 1898/1901. The darkness gathers as various figures walk along a tree-lined street illuminated by lanterns. A Catalan Impressionist, Pichot was an early mentor to Salvador Dali and a friend to Picasso and Gertrude Stein.
