  1. "For now, people are more likely to be struck by lightning than by falling space junk. But those odds are shifting. Sean O’Keefe, a former NASA administrator, ... and other experts say that governments and companies should be compelled to use materials that will fully disintegrate. No such regulation exists."

  2. We just filed a formal Reply Comment with the FCC opposing Cowboy Space’s massive 20,000-satellite data center constellation. Instead of addressing the scientific and technical concerns we presented, Cowboy Space relied almost entirely on procedural deflections.

We won't let orbital greenwashing go unchallenged.

  3. Orbital data centers have moved rapidly from the margins to a key trend in space development. Join SWF on July 29 in Washington, DC, for a panel on space safety, sustainability, & policy coordination questions raised by ODCs.

  4. "If all satellites in orbit suddenly lost the ability to manoeuvre and control their orientation, how long would it take for two to come close enough to crash? In 2018, before megaconstellations began launching, the CRASH Clock value was 164 days. It has been steadily dropping since then. Our new research finds that as of May 2026, it is at 2.5 days."

  5. Space exploration does not have to follow the logic of colonialism.
Although this event was already on June 19th, I want to highlight the important work from this multidisciplinary initiative.

  6. 🌌 Above us, an invisible constellation grows. Not of stars, but of our own making: fragments racing through the dark at unfathomable speeds, each piece a ghost of ambition turned hazard.

💫 What we send skyward returns as legacy, sometimes circling for decades or longer in silent judgment.

  7. The advent of reusable rockets led to a dramatic increase of space waste influx into the atmosphere - thanks to non-reusable upper stages. About half of the influx is coming from Space Karen. From a recent paper by Schulz et al. arxiv.org/abs/2510.21328 #SpaceSustainability

  8. What a disappointment! The proposed #EU Space Act does not include any measures to reduce the environmental impact of the space sector. Only a lifecycle analysis needs to be done, yet this does not reduce environmental impacts! So as usual, the only sustainability action will be a recognition that our activities are not sustainable 🤡 #SpaceSustainability

  10. "The fact that the #EU #Space Act establishes some binding measures regarding collision avoidance, information sharing, cybersecurity, and other space activities will break with past reluctance to go down that path and establish a new model. The United States and other stakeholders will find new challenges to their preference for laissez faire-driven space traffic management and space sustainability policies."

  11. "With over 34,000 large debris pieces in orbit and millions of smaller fragments, the threat of collisions and the #KesslerSyndrome looms large. International cooperation, stringent regulations, and technological solutions are proposed to address the crisis, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive global framework to ensure #SpaceSustainability for future generations."

  12. Springer International has just released "Space Ecology: From Earth to Moon and Mars", by Patrizia Caraveo. The book "extends the concept of environmental protection to orbital space, which should be used in a sustainable way."

  13. Bad news for the impact of increasing rocket launches on the terrestrial #environment: "Our ‘ambitious’ scenario (2,040 launches/year) leads to a -0.29% depletion in annual-mean, near-global total column #ozone, relative to a simulation with no rocket launches. Antarctic springtime ozone decreases by 3.9%. Our ‘conservative’ scenario (884 launches/year) leads to a -0.17% annual depletion; current licensing rates suggest this scenario may be exceeded sooner than 2030."

  14. "This potential treasure hunt in space has sparked discussions about ownership laws, space ethics, and environmental implications. As these celestial bodies could herald an era where space becomes a frontier for industry and sustainable energy, they invoke questions about the regulation of extraterrestrial resource claims."

  15. Here is a run-down on Dark & Quiet Skies activities at the recent UN COPUOS Science & Technology Subcommittee meeting from @iau_cps: cps.iau.org/news/un-meeting-fe

"The discussion included remarks on the need to find balanced solutions, the urgent need for nations to support research on mitigations, considerations on the cultural heritage of the night sky, and the importance of space sustainability discussions within international bodies."
