Since I've been away from here for a bit, how about an introduction?

Hi there, I'm dAVE! I'm based in Seattle, WA, USA. I'm a dad that enjoys brewing coffee with one of my many coffee brewing toys. I also enjoy video games and reading science fiction.

As a creative outlet I like to make experimental electronic music and sound art. I mostly focus on making improvised pieces using my Roland SP404 MKII sampler and an array of effects pedals and instruments.

When making music I try to be in the moment as much as possible and just record and move on. I like to record what I'm doing down to stereo right away with no real mixing afterwards and very little mastering. Capturing the raw feeling of the moment is what is most important to me.

could buy an og #roland #sp404 just for this task, but the the objective really is to avoid that. either someone with the hardware should gleefully oblige, or i should be able to use some tools to extract the pcm data

My latest release is a single of sorts with bonus content. It is the track I made for Bonkwave Volume 3 and the jam sessions it came from. I also included a track with everything playing back at once because I knew what the people really want.
It feels like a fun way to show how I made the track. I jammed out some stuff on my SP404 MKII and recorded it all each time. From within one of them I found the song I ended up submitting for the compilation.

Plugging the laptop into my SP404 mk2 as a sound source for creating samples feels like a great companion to my keyboard I have for a piano sound. It could even provide a backing track if I want, but having it to build samples with has lots of fun possibilities in my mind.

Birthday challenge accomplished! I spent today working on music and came away with four tracks that I wrote and recorded all in the same day. This was a lot of fun and I’m pretty sure this could be a new approach to making music for me. I got to just focus on creation and getting an idea out without getting caught up in all of the tiny details that have kept me from finishing projects in the past. Doing this also helped me achieve my goal of doing multiple releases this year. Everything was done on my Roland SP404 mk2 with various instruments and even my own voice. Next Monday, October 9th, is my birthday. Thinking on what I want to do I’ve decided I’m going to release new music. I’m going to do what I did for Father’s Day last year and start something new that day, complete it, and then release it.
When I did it last year I made two tracks. This time I’m going to try for more. I’m not going to worry about the length of each one though. My focus will be on just getting ideas down. The whole thing can be a sketch of sorts of my thoughts that day.
As an extra bit of fun I’m also going to do it all without my computer. Instead I will work it all out on my SP404 mk2, my keyboard, and any other bits of gear I have. I will still do some level of mastering on my computer, but the creation process will be without it.
I’m excited for the exercise. I will write up my thoughts about it all here afterwards at some point. It should be fun!

I’m looking into ways to add groove and feeling to beats on my SP404 mk2. I know I can perform them and record without quantization and the patterns will play as I did, which is good. But, to be honest I’m not the best finger drummer and I like the TR-REC mode better to play things via a sequencer. This also feels more natural to me for doing this in a live setting for a performance.

All of this to say I am looking into adding a small delay to the start of the sample so I can trigger them on the beat, but they are 40ms or so behind to give it groove and feeling.

Now I just need to add a few milliseconds of silence at the start of some samples and see how it goes.
