  1. @selea @carapace i’m a huge fan of #SOVOL lately; they’re actually doing open source #3DPrinters correctly.

I have their SV08, which is a 3D printer hacker’s dream rig: everything on it works well enough, right out of the box, and most everything in the box is compatible with many of the Voron 2.4 modifications out there. sovol3d.com/products/sovol-sv0

The Sovol Zero is their take on the Voron 0.2 - I haven’t played with one of those but they seem to be well received by the community too. sovol3d.com/products/sovol-zer

I do however understand that a hackable printer may not be the ideal choice for a #hackerspace: there’s a lot of temptation to modify such a machine, and machine mods in a hackerspace often mean machines that just don’t work anymore, with a bonus side effect of members being angry with one another.

  2. An blunt advice for #3DPrinting:

If you want to diy, look into #Voron designs, RatRig, ProForge 300 and others.

HOWEVER if you just want a printer that works, from a company that won't fuck you over, buy a #Prusa. Period. Their attempts at OSI-non-compliant licenses are a piss in the ocean compared to what #BambuLab, #Creality, #FlashForge, #Elegoo, #Anycubic and even #Sovol have been done or are still doing (to be fair, with Sovol it's mostly trashy customer support).

Too loose → ~20 mm layer shift mid-print.

Looks like a Rockchip RK3308 board running Klipper + Mainsail.

Before printing anything I'm making a full OS backup and inventory of what's installed.

  22. Hey @clayton,

    Re: https://claytonerrington.com/blog/2026-w03/,

Are you still thinking about getting a #3DPrinter? What brands are looking good to you? I've got some recommendations and contra-recommendations. I'm a big fan of #Prusa because of their (mostly?) #OpenSource stance on things, although I've been decently happy with my #SOVOL printer, which was both inexpensive, and also mostly open.

I'd recommend staying away from #BambuLabs, as they're trying to become the #Apple of #3DPrinting, and I absolutely mean that as an insult. XD

Re: Laptops really being "portable computers," I recall [referring to] the Classic all-in-on Macs as laptops, so I guess that should work both ways! ;)

  23. We met family members for the holidays who recently began #3Dprinting, and we discussed #3Dmodeling. They use a nice Bambu Lab printer; it operates in a walled garden with cloud services in China which would be a deal breaker for me.

Long story short: I discovered #CadQuery for parametric design, and soon noticed that the market for 3D printers is saturated... I ordered a cheap refurbished #SOVOL SV06 which mostly runs OSS. It arrived today, on new year's eve!

    There is lots to learn.

  24. Ok, so I've been poking around in the software. It's running debian bullseye 😭 and has a custom kernel installed for the Allwinner H616 chip.

I think the medium term solution to this madness is following the various guides online to get it running mainline klipper as they seem to use armbian images. I'd love to get nixos on it but not apparent chip support appears.

  25. @kims @MamaLake I have successfully wrangled the manufacturer-provided firmwares off my #Sovol SV08 (#3DPrinting) and replaced the code on all three of its microcontrollers with mainline #Klipper and the Katapult bootloader.

I verified it’s a proper upgrade to the printer’s stock setup by proceeding to print a picture-perfect, gapless, 350x350mm first layer.

The first critical step in upgrading this bargain basement #Voron to my multi-toolhead #INDX dream machine is well underway! 🤩

Now I can keep up to date with the coolest new 3D printing software developments! Eddy current bed probing! Adaptive bed meshing! Hacks ahoy!

  26. I bought a #Sovol #SV08 for multiple reasons that are still valid, it arrived yesterday, the ‚build’ was mostly easy, it‘s a fine machine, it’s large, fast and very loud, and I‘m really happy.
But dang, it is not a #prusa in so many ways I didn‘t know my #MK3 was a Prusa!
Still, it‘s amazing how far we got in about 7 years.

  31. Decided to go ahead and pulled the trigger on a #Sovol Zero 3D Printer the other day. I remember when it was initially announced, thinking that while it was dang nice, just a bit more than I wanted to spend. However, with the holiday sale, it was down to $380, $120 off.

I debated for half a day, but went ahead and did it

    Should be here soon.

Now, just to figure out where it's gonna live. 🤣

  32. Second print attempt on the SV08. It's made it past the second layer, so that's nice.

I have no idea if Sovol actually contributed the Orca profiles, but it's always a bad experience when they don't work.

  34. Looking at maybe upgrading to a new 3D printer at some point in the next year, and as much as I'd love to build a Voron from scratch I'm not sure I'll have the time or the money.

Currently I'm looking at the Sovol SV08 (with the enclosure) and the Prusa Core One.

Does anyone here have any recommendations?

  37. Hi, is anyone here using a #Ratrig #3dPrinter? I recently got an A1 mini to try the Bambu experience in await of their next big release but I’m reconsidering this now for … reasons. So I took a glance at Ratrig as they offer an IDEX upgrade. So my questions: do they work stable, can calibrate automatically and print without further fiddling once build and set up?

  38. I’m printing my first temp tower on my SV08. This thing is so damn fast!

  39. I bought myself a Christmas present. Upgraded from an Anycubic Vyper to this Sovol SV08. I’ve barely finished calibrating and I’m already impressed. I’m expecting to have a lot of fun with this thing.

  41. Lots of good points in @lostintech 's review of the SV06 Ace.

My faith in was restored with a Klipper-ized SV06 and the Ace is that and more.

I recognize a lot of SV08 influence in the Ace too.

I don't really _need_ an Ace, but it looks like a lot of value.

  43. Replacing the original air duct and a fan on 3D printer (Sovol SV06)

If you’re reading this on fediverse and the layout is off, here’s the link to the original blog post with a nice text & pictures layout.

It started with this ‘blob of death’. I was printing with nylon, when it happened. Nylon filament is a PITA. It was good when I unpacked it and the next day. Then it caught so much moisture that printing was almost impossible. I even bought a filament dryer to dry it with no success.

The prints had gaps (because of exploding water droplets) and then the blob formed when I was away.

When I removed the blob, the old air duct broke.

I searched Printables for a new duct and found this one: Nautilus.

    I’ve bought a new, stronger blower fan (5015 24v).

Then I printed the new duct (using nylon filament).

The printed duct is ugly (not very smooth) because I used wet nylon filament.

Then I glued the parts together. Firstly I used superglue, but it didn’t hold for long. Then I used 2-component epoxy glue.

I removed the old fan and attaching plate. Then I mounted a new fan and a duct. I used some random bolts to attach it to the extruder.

I had to cut wires and replace a connector. The connector that came with fan was too big. I reused the old fan’s conector.
Then I had to sand off the bottom (mostly remainings of epoxy), because it touched the bed when homing.

Now the fan works really well. I tested it during 5-hr PLA print and it went without problems.

I wanted to replace the original fan from the beginning, because it was mounted very close to the bed and sucked the hot air. It started to fail and it was loud. The blob and broken duct was a push to replace it.

I even increased the speed of printing from 60 to 100mms and the new fan performed pretty well.

Nevertheless, I will print another duct bc I’m not sure how long this one will last. I fear of heat related warping.
