At the end of WWII, the Soviet Union shifted its censorship into high gear in order to minimize the corrupting influence of the West. The punishment for disseminating banned materials could be imprisonment in a gulag, or even death. But that didn’t stop the enterprising, innovative people of the former USSR. @TheConversationUS explains “bone music,” where recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis were etched into used X-ray film. “The music … suggested that a different sort of life is possible, beyond the strictures of Communist officials. How could a political system that prohibited beautiful music, many asked, possibly merit the allegiance of its citizens?”

There's a new #Netflix #history #documentary series on #WorldWarII called #FromTheFrontLines. It's been out a week. It has lots of color archival footage and looks good. But I noticed a serious problem:
The second and third episodes deal with #Nazi Germany's invasion of #Soviet #Russia. But not once does the documentary mention that #SovietRussia and #NaziGermany had signed an alliance before the invasion. If you didn't know this you'd think #Germany invaded an innocent #SovietUnion.
Not true!

“Bone Music”
In 1950s Russia, one of the only ways to hear blues, jazz and rock’n’roll from America was to bootleg a record pressed up on a discarded X-ray plate.
First invented by Ruslan Bogoslowski the bootlegs were pressed on thick radiographs found in hospital bins and then cut into rough discs, sometimes using a cigarette to burn the central hole. Bogoslowski would eventually spend five years imprisoned in Siberia for this innovation. #bonemusic #sovietunion #sovietrussia #bootlegseries

Yak-9UM This is - amazingly - not a restoration of one of the thousands of the Yak-9s built in Soviet Russia during WW2, but a new-built example, using original drawings, by the Yakovlev concern in Russia. The main change from the original specification was to install a U.S. Allison V-1710 engine, rather than the Klimov VK-107A. in #1989 the prison of nations #USSR of #sovietrussia began its dissolution. It was time to help russia's victims with their need to reindustrialize. Along with all the countless developing countries seeking progress. "Yes, but with democratic values and rule of law, ok?"
Yet, immediately after #CCP again revealed its nature with #tiananmenmassacre, democracies lined up to finance and reindustrialize that #dictatorship instead. With honorary #WTO membership to manipulate at will.
You can look at *any* tinpot dictatorship or strongman today and ask if he would be in power without #CCP's support and *example*. That includes #putin and the magas he groomed
