[🚫no white men comments🚫]
I'm in a SovCit group on Facebook, but it's a group specifically to talk about the rising issue of the SovCit movement in Australia, and the challenges it poses to justice and law organisations—its clear from the group description that this is the groups aim. But also, SovCits aren't known for their rigorous research practices (ie: reading a group description).
Every now and then an actual SovCit will join and post. Like this morning, when someone asked if there was an official Sovereign Citizen logo, and then made individual comments tagging each person who laugh reacted and called them a pussy. Which, I guess, shows a level of commitment that should be admired?
He got really annoyed at what I responded with...
_____
* the idea of there being an "official SovCit" anything kind of goes against the whole spirit of it all, tbh** I'm not a SovCit. From a criminological perspective, the intersection of state surveillance and consent, and how they fit with the human nature towards gnosticism/esotericism leading to conspiracy theories fascinates me

CW: NZ SovCits lose in court
Yet more SovCits living in a fantasy world where laws don't apply to them. A Wairarapa couple named van Velzen and van Gool stopped paying their rates years ago. The Council sought payment from ANZ as the mortgagee and the bank served notice on the couple.
The vans went full SovCit, demanded that the bank prove it had authority over "the living man or woman", challenged the validity of the mortgage, claimed local rating laws did not apply to them and sued BNZ for $2m.
Judge Boldt said he would “not attempt to analyse any aspect of the claim further” and made a decision on the papers without requiring a hearing.
“It makes no sense at all, and none of the legal propositions said to support it has any basis in reality,” he said.
“The claim is choked with pseudo-law. It includes numerous references to inapplicable statutory provisions, biblical citations, and tropes - such as the inappropriate use of the trade mark symbol, an incongruous fixation on admiralty, a rejection of usual forms of address and archaic phrasing - common in the sovereign citizen movement.
“Claims of that nature have been consistently struck out by the senior courts.”
Touché.
---
Interestingly, this judgement is an official "first strike" under New Zealand’s court guidelines.
"Judge Boldt warned the residents that if they filed any subsequent lawsuit that was struck out as an abuse of process within the next two years, they would face an automatic three-year ban from launching civil proceedings across any New Zealand court or tribunal."

CW: NZ NZ SovCit couple will lose their house, cos "Doh!"
A Sovereign Citizen couple bought a Hikurangi house in 2015 and stopped paying rates two years later.
Unsurprisingly, the Whangārei District Council took a dim view of the situation and sent numerous statements over the years, while penalties and interest accrued. The total debt is now over $40k.
"But the couple didn’t pay, and in early 2021 they sent the council’s chief executive a “proclamation of self-determination and individual sovereignty” as well as a notice of trespass."
Whoop whoop! SovCit alert!
The Council applied to sell the house and won, but the couple appealed the District Court decision.
Representing himself (!) in the High Court, Timaru Davis claimed that the Rating Act did not apply to them.
Judge said "Nah!"

CW: NZ - SovCit defends herself in court
Riiria Tatana owned a fresh juice company in the Hawkes Bay, but she refused to register under the Food Act, claiming that MPI had no jurisdiction as she operated under "God's law."
The court hasn't seen it that way.
Tatana is defending herself (!) and on the stand, she accused the Judge of "treason", threatened to sue the Crown for "$134 trillion” and made this sweeping statement.
“The Crown is null and void and has no jurisdiction over the people of Aotearoa.”
Just another sad sovereign citizen wasting court time.
The Judge has reserved her decision.

CW: NZ - Sovereign citizens and guns
The NZ Police manual has been updated. In future, officers who encounter sovereign citizens and learn they hold a firearms licence are to refer the individuals to the Firearms Safety Authority for review.
Furthermore, "... where an officer suspects an individual represents a security threat, they should contact the National Security Group at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet."
The days of treating cookers as harmless cranks are ending.

Dezi Freeman killed by police in Victoria's north-east after seven-month hunt
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-30/vic-dezi-freeman-search-fatal-shooting/106510112"Sovereign Citizen" fanatic, Dezi Freeman, has been found and killed by police. I'm not a fan of the police shooting people dead, and would have preferred they arrested him and put him on trial. Sure, you could argue the community is safer without a murderous, gun-toting, SovCit on the loose. To add to my concerns, I think he's going to be mythologised by SovCit folks as a hero who fought the system and went out in a blaze of glory.
Back in August last year, Dezi Freeman evaded arrest at his home in Porepunkah on allegations of violence, some possibly of a sexual nature, and some possibly involving children. He shot at the police and killed two. For the last seven months, it was suspected he was hiding nearby and receiving help from family or friends. Despite the media suggesting he was experienced with hiking and the outdoors, and the shit that Preppers like to claim about their skills, there's a practical limit to how well a human can live in isolation.

CW: Surprise! Wanaka cell tower arsonist is a Sov Cit
Daniel Miller, 41, plasterer from Albert Town has been charged with five counts of "intentionally damaging a cellphone tower or telecommunications infrastructure by fire." They've got him for the Lindis tower as well.
But this cooker is a sovereign citizen who ignored the judge and kept speaking over her. She muted his mic.
When she gave him another chance he claimed he was not Mr Miller. "I’m a living man standing in my natural state."
Remanded in custody for trial in April.

Three sovereign citizens walked into the Dunedin courthouse yesterday and demanded to see a judge. It turned out they wanted to sue the court.
Naturally court staff weren't very helpful, so the three locked themselves into a room and refused to come out. Twelve cops arrived and arrested them.
The trio, aged 48-62, will appear in Dunedin Court charged with trespass and refusing to provide a DNA sample. The 62-year-old was also charged with refusing to supply photograph and fingerprints.
Dumb conspiracies really don't apply in the real world. FAFO.

More than 100 guns seized in police raids on sovereign citizens

The anti-protesters are saying that the neonazi/sovcit group numbers appear to be smaller than the numbers that showed up to the national Palestine protest in Canberra.
It would be interesting to know if the protestors are Canberran or if they travelled to here.
-
I'm hearing that there were more police than neonazi/sovcit protestors at the Canberra protests. Apparently Pauline made a showing as well.
Edit: Hmm, actually, there might be a disagreement in the thread I'm reading from anti-protesters regarding how large the protest was. But there are no numbers.

Just been watching a film called Sovereign, starring Nick Offerman as a sovereign citizen. Disturbingly accurate look at the life of cookers, and just how violent they can be.
-
Dr Hobbs said many sovereign citizens saw guns as a way to "protect themselves" against "malicious, wicked forces".

@3TomatoesShort Thing is, there's been a fair bit about #sovcit in the news in the last few weeks. Then one of their poster-boys does this? They're going to froth themselves into a giddy state of hate for the brutalist pig law enforcers, or hail him as some kind of bizarre martyr. Either way, escalations and more bad things are ahead.

#SovereignCitizen #SovCit murders two (almost 3) cops trying to serve him with a warrant for alleged sexual offences?
Fuck me. That shit's got way too dangerous, way too fast. Very sad.

CW: SovCits in Aussie
ABC's Four Corners profiles a group of Aussie sovereign citizens who identify as sheriffs and believe they can make their own laws, hold pretend courts then cosplay as enforcers serving documents.
Their little badges are laminated, making them look *really* official.
Imagine a scenario where the world's village idiots got together and pronounced that they were now in charge of everything. That's SovCits.
While they may seem like a sad group of fantasists, there's an insidious side to their mission. As with VFF in NZ, they're infiltrating local Councils and clogging democracy by asking loads of dumb questions.
Most of them were weaponised during Covid lockdowns when conspiracies blossomed. A time when society's losers discovered that becoming a SovCit made them part of a crowd, albeit a crowd of deluded losers.
There's one thing these groups have in common. When they meet reality in court, the SovCits always lose. This is true in NZ, in every state of Australia and in every country in the world.

One of NZ's foulest sovereign citizens is off to jail for a while. Richard Sivell issued multiple and detailed threats to kill our Prime Minister at the time, Jacinda Ardern.
Sivell has previously been charged with distributing the mosque video and went on the run from Police for two years.
As usual, SovCit arguments did not find favour with the court which sentenced Sivell to 11 months in the pokey.
That seems extremely light and ignores the element of incitement.

A family of feral sovereign citizens living in the hills outside Tauranga have been convicted of 23 offences related to more than a dozen illegal buildings.
They challenged the jurisdiction of the council to file charges against them, stating the “Crown’s administrations of living men’s and women’s affairs is invalid”. They also challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the charges. They lost.
So they headed to the High Court where Justice Andrew Becroft described their defense as "legally incomprehensible."
“These arguments are characteristic of ‘pseudo-law’ and ‘sovereign citizen’ type arguments... With the very greatest of respect to the applicants and their submissions, their own use of the word “gibberish” is an appropriate a description of what they have filed as any,” he said.
Judge Becroft struck out the proceedings.
Sov Cits *never* win in court.

Charlie Mitchell takes a deep dive into Sam and Mark Bailey, two former New Zealand doctors turned anti-vaxxers who promote 'alternative' health and reject most modern medicine.
They've both become "devout Christians" who preach some downright dangerous theories to their 30,000 Substack followers, including:
* People with melanoma should spend more time in the sun.
* Newborns with sepsis should not be treated with antibiotics but vitamin C
* They oppose virtually all health screening, including mammograms and cervical smears
* They do not believe there is an immune system
* HIV does not cause Aids
* the cold is not contagious
* Covid-19 doesn’t existIf that's not enough to set off the 'woo-woo' alarms, they also fly a sovereign Citizen flag above their house.
They live amongst us.

Aaron Alexander and a mate vandalised a bach in the Abel Tasman Park in 2021. They lit fires and defaced walls with slogans such as “allodial land” and “Kelvyn Alp”.
At trial he chose not to give or call evidence and was found guilty. So Alexander, a self-representing cooker, appealed both his conviction and sentence.
He lost. SovCits always do.

A sovereign citizen from Southland thought he'd get off paying rates and penalties by hurling false accusations at a Court Registrar, accusing them of being paid to change documents.
Describing the allegations as "outrageous and slanderous", the Judge rightly threw out the case.
The SovCit who calls himself “living man: david-john: of the house wilson” has a month to decide if he wants to lose all over again in the Appeal Court.

What does an anti-vax eye surgeon do when vaccination is an express condition of his professional membership of the Medical Council? Easy! He signs up to an "alternative" Med Council run by cookers -- the Wakaminenga Health Council -- which only exists on Facebook and has 79 members. It has a real SovCit feel to it.
Napier ophthalmologist Dr Philip Macdonald was found guilty on 19 charges of practicing without a license last year and fined $21,000. His appeal to the High Court has just been shot down in flames.
This is a reminder that cookerism isn't confined exclusively to low-IQ individuals. Just mainly.
