I applaud my good friend - @neonbubble - extolling the virtues of Portsmouth (especially after right-wing outside squinnying dinlos tried to intimidate the RNLI and good citizens of the city last month).

I think I'll jump on his bandwagon too...

Here's some wonderful street art of Peter Sellers on Castle Road, Southsea. He was born within the attached building to the left on 8 September 1925.

Southsea Castle, built in a style to take gun warfare into consideration and to defend Portsmouth from French invasion threats under the direction of Henry VIII in 1544. That attack came a year later when the French landed on the Isle of Wight. It's said that Henry was here and watching when the flagship Mary Rose sailed out to meet the attack and sank. The wreck was recovered in 1982 and can be viewed in the dockyard.

This weekend in Portsmouth the International Kite Festival takes place on Southsea Common. It's the UK's largest kite festival and is free to attend, plus buses are free in Portsmouth this weekend too.

A little bit of #LocalHistory : The Battle of Southsea was a series of riots over 4 days in August 1874 over access to a section of #Southsea beach. Earlier in 1874, the Clarence Pier Company attempted to connect Clarence Pier to the nearby Assembly Rooms effectively closing public access to the beach between the pier and the Hot Walls in Old Portsmouth. A fine cultural evening of instrumental mellifluousness at the Wedge last night; gloriously wonky tweaked beats courtesy of Secret Self, elegiac looped strings from violinist/violist Marina Moore and, to headline, the dark, ambient electronica of Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan (which is one the best band names of recent times).

With each set was complemented by animated visuals I could enjoy the mesmerising images alongside the music or, by closing my eyes, enjoy the soundtrack to the movie in my mind.

A fab nighht of live music at the Wedge, courtesy of Pompey's own Fake Empire and a hand-picked selection of local support bands, all for less than the cost of two beers.

With a curated line-up, and acts split between the main stage and the smaller Edge space, the evening had a familiar festival vibe (reminiscent of Dials and the much missed SputhseaFest, both of which took advantage of the Wedge's two room set up, and the upcoming Night Currents)

A great way both to showcase local talent and entertain music lovers on a wet Saturday night, all in Southsea's excellent Wedgewood Rooms. Lovely.

For #ThrowbackThursday it's the early 1970s and here's me emerging from the Phantom Zone on Southsea Common where I'd been banished for unspeakable crimes by Jor-El. I held no grudge, though, for the punishment was just and gave me a chance to hone my interdimensional pocket universe escape techniques which have come in handy on several occasions since.

For #FensterFreitag here's the 1961 redesign of Clarence Pier pavilion, #Southsea, #Portsmouth, finally replacing a 19th century structure that had been damaged in World War II bombing.

The architects A.E. Cogswell & Sons were responsible. Cogswell himself designed many pubs in Portsmouth including those of the now defunct #Brickwoods chain, as well as several Tudor-style buildings in the city.
