  1. Hope: Avatar In South Korea

Summary: two films merge into a mess.

So the first part of this film when the townfolk where fighting the massive creature made sense, then more aliens showed up who couldn’t die, could speak and looked different to how the aliens had been shown at the start of the film.

The film has some fun moments and memorable lines but by and large it is on for too long and serious pacing issues.

You could skip the last third of the film and not miss anything, the ending sets up a sequel and is pretty weak.

Overall, a film that doesn’t know what it wants to be.

    1.5/5

    Pros.

    A few good moments

    Some good action

    Cons.

    It’s too long

    It’s dull

It feels like two films mashed together

    The ending

  2. Colony: 28 Days Too Late

Summary: a bioweapon is unleashed in a shopping centre turning people into hive mind zombies.

So this film was quite the disappointment, Train to Buscan is a good film and even it’s sequel had some merits but this film just feels flat. It feels like a tried rehash of so many other zombie films.

The pacing is also quite brutal, on at over 2 hours a lot of this is needless talking and plots about backstabbing. There are times when you just wish the film would hurry up, but it doesn’t.

Overall, a slog that shows that maybe zombies are played out.

    2/5

    Pros.

    It’s got some good action

The hive mind aspect is interesting

    Cons.

    It’s badly paced

    It feels done before

    The ending

  5. one of the things i enjoy about #worldcinema is the journey of discovery i sometimes end up taking. a taxi driver (2017) for example, is based on real events from 1980 of which i'd never heard of. the film covers the gwagju uprising, the ramifications of which still exist today with a truth commission launched in 2020. it proved a pivotal step in south korea's journey to democracy. link to the wikipedia entry en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangj for anyone who's interested.
