SOUTHEASTERN LINCOLN COUNTY...At 209 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy
rain over the Blue 2 and South Fork burn scars. Between 0.25 and
0.75 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5
to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing

The South Fork and Salt fires, which ignited on June 17, 2024, burned 17,066 and 7,688 acres, respectively, significantly impacting Lincoln National Forest. The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program assessed the damage, focusing on soil burn severity, hydrology, and critical values such as human safety, roads, recreation sites, and cultural resources. Collaborative efforts with various agencies aim to mitigate post-fire risks and support recovery.

Closures: A South Fork Fire Emergency Closure Order was issued on June 20, 2024, for national forest lands within the Smokey Bear Ranger District. The identified areas, and roads and trails therein, are closed to public access to allow firefighting personnel to work and through the fire area safely. Tribal members who have been displaced outside of the Mescalero Apache Reservation due to the fires are strongly encouraged to contact the Tribe's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to help you and your families get back to the reservation. If you're stranded out of town at other evacuation sites, please call the EOC at 575-464-9214 for more details.

Weather: Temperatures will remain in the mid-high 80s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms return, bringing along the risk of flash floods and debris flows.

Fire Activity: The South Fork and Salt fires are experiencing limited fire activity, thanks in part to daily scattered storms, and the hard work firefighters are putting in to find and extinguish hot spots. Occasional smoke will be visible as pockets of unburned fuels and could ignite, even as monsoonal weather patterns move into the area.
Crews continue to mop up and begin to repair actions taken by firefighters to prevent the South Fork and Salt fires from growing. Cooperators, and utility providers are working to address service needs for communities. As a reminder, conditions are dynamic and will remain that way through the duration of the incident...

Per the KOB coverage: "“We do have a lot of people unaccounted for it this time. I’m not saying that they may be at shelter somewhere, we haven’t found them. So those will become crime scenes, once the bodies discovered or remnants, then they have to come in and forensically take care of that. That takes time. So we have all those areas boxed off,” said Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford.
Village leaders revealed Sunday recovery teams have already identified more potential deaths, but it appears those are still under investigation."

As the Village of Ruidoso moves towards re-entry for residents Monday morning at 8:00 AM, we want to make it clear that there are “NO ENTRY/EXCLUSION ZONES” that will not be accessible to residents, as they are currently considered crime scenes. There are recovery efforts going on in these areas, and until they are cleared by USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) canine strike teams, people cannot be in these areas. Potentially heavy rainfall is headed towards #Ruidoso today. While this could help suppress the South Fork and Salt wildfires, it could also trigger additional #mudslides and #flashflood emergencies.
