Most likely a young male Southern Hawker or Blue Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) in a resting position. One of the most beautiful #dragonflies in Switzerland.

After yesterday's male, a female Southern Hawker turned up today, laying eggs around the margins of my pond :-)
She positioned them on the rotting wood (and stone) edging the pond, more than 20cm above the (currently low) surface of the water. They will hatch next Spring.
The larvae develop over two to three years, hunting tadpoles and invertebrates in the pond. Adults can take insects as large as butterflies.

Southern Hawker dragonflies usually visit my garden - this male is perched on a Buddleja :-)
Even a small pond attracts lots of wildlife, as does the Buddleja, so there's often something interesting to see.
A few years ago, a Southern Hawker crash-landed - at 50mph - through my vehicle's open window and ended up on the back of my neck. It survived the drive home. I put it in my garden, but sadly, by morning it had died.

Vielleicht ahnt Ihr, warum mein Profilname "Aeshna" lautet.

This beautiful Southern Hawker dragonfly crossed my path this afternoon while I was walking around Barley fields south of Royston.
