An islander’s life in the Southern Gulf Island is organized around ferry schedules for coming and going. The evening is warm at near the end of a heat wave and we welcome the cool breeze off of the sea as the Queen of Cumberland leaves Pender Island to take us home to Mayne Island. A quiet settles in next to the rumble of the boat engine. We should be home and in the door about 9:45 pm. Tomorrow will be another day.

Another four of my paintings have recently sold to art collectors. This year has been going fairly well so far. I have completed and released 19 paintings and sold 18 from my inventory. This success is partly due to my milestone birthday surprise special but not entirely. Still, I am humbly grateful regardless of the reason.

Last evening after the summer rain one of my favourite trees outside my window is very happy. It had been a very long time since it rained here on the southwest coast of Canada.
It is our sixth year of summer drought but there was enough rain yesterday for rain barrels to be filled and give the trees and plants a good drink.

From spring to fall, I can be found around our small southwest coast of Canada island with an easel set up to plein air paint. These small or larger loosely painted surfaces become works in their own right but are also used for other studio works later on.
As a landscape painter, there is a lot of pleasure in spending 30 - 60 minutes at a time brushing in the world around me. I leave with fresh excitement and ideas that carry me through the rest of the day and week.

In the last five weeks, nine of my paintings have found homes. There are still 135 available out of about 600 paintings I have created in the past twelve years. I had to think long and hard about the best way to share this news here on Mastodon with alt text. But I think I got it!
It is kind of a big deal finding homes for paintings and certainly several over a short amount of time is newsworthy, yes? However, I am having a milestone birthday and this is how I am celebrating!

On the easel today…
After six weeks of working on a larger canvas I am just not quite ready to share, I have started a 20 x16 inch oil on canvas of Arbutus Trees. Over the next couple of days I will finish it up wet-into-wet and then let it dry a bit possible before adding final highlights.

This particular Maple tree is excellent council on the strength of persistence and creativity. She is a gentle woman tree who guards the trail and brushes me with her falling leaves as she lets go of the southwest coast November sky…..

48 x 36 inchesArtist notes: On November 30, 2021 at 4:51 pm I was coming home from a friends and looked up to see the third in a parade of atmospheric rivers turning a bend overhead. I was so astonished that I pulled over to take a closer look and took a few reference images. I know right then and there that this beauty was going under the brush. Usually we do not get to see the power and size of these phenomena because the heavy rains is coming down all around us and visibility is poor. Not the case this time! People saw it all around the area from sea to shore.

After a morning painting in the studio, I went down to the shores of the Salish Sea on Mayne Island for a bit. Mount Baker was catching the last of the afternoon sun. A large first year Glaucous-winged Gull sat atop a sandstone rock while Surfbirds foraged at the water’s edge. A beautiful break in the weather making one more glad than usual to be alive.

This morning took us to Oyster Bay where the seals had moved in close to shore with the winter high tides. An eagle swooped in to land on a sandstone islet at one point. Then the sun came out. I never did make it into the art studio to work on a painting that is midway complete. 😉

A few snippets from yesterday’s hike in Saint John Point Park on Mayne Island. The day wasn’t very promising and I almost didn’t go but once on the trails it was pleasant enough in pungent earthy dampness with traces of wood smoke coming from nearby homes keeping their inhabitants cozy and dry.
