They came for a fiddling contest in Weakley County, Tennessee. 🎻
But before the night was over, folks were whispering about Ples Haslock—and the strange feeling that settled over the room when he began to play.

Some said Ples Haslock could make a fiddle sing like no one else in Tennessee. 🎻
In Weakley County, old-timers still tell of the night he appeared for one last fiddling contest—and left the crowd uneasy long after the music stopped.

The Satilla, a snaking black water river, is showing its white sand bones, while the pines whistle a dry fire-voice. Old hymns promise an "abundance of rain," but today we’re singing to the clouds like they’re the ghosts of long lost friends. #Georgia #SatillaRiver #Nature #SouthernFolklore

"Rain, rain, come this way, Come and wash the dust away. Rain, rain, pour down fast, Make the thirsty corn-fields last." If ever there was a time S Georgia needed children to be playfully chanting a tune, it's now. #SouthernFolklore #Georgia #Drought #Folklore

During sun-showers in the South, you will hear someone say, "The Devil is beating his wife!" Some say he is angry with God for creating beautiful sunny days, & takes his anger out on her. In turn, she cries large tears / raindrops. #FaustianFriday #SouthernFolklore #WitchSky #FolkWitch

A legend long whispered in Memphis.
At Brinkley Female College, the ghost of a young woman named Lizzie was said to appear to students — and to tell them where a jar had been buried on the grounds.
The jar was found.
Its whereabouts today are unknown.

There is an old wives' tale that that if a "snapper" bites you, it won't let go till it hears thunder. I don't know about you, but this monster? I wouldn't want to test that tale to find out! #FolkloreThursday #SouthernFolklore

Born as an enslaved person, Georgia's Harriet Powers is one of the most famous African American folk quilters. Only two of her quilts remain: her Bible Quilt, and Pictorial Quilt. A tangible way of storytelling and sharing folklore! #SouthernFolklore
