Thanks to everyone who showed up at last night’s OpenStreetMap 20th birthday party! It was great to see regulars, old friends, and some newcomers too. Like OSM, the cake looked plain at first, but it turned out to be exquisite once we were through with it. 😋
We held a mini mapathon to add affordable housing complexes from the City of San José’s housing portal. Kudos to our mappers for helping us represent more of what matters in our community.
Hope to see you all again soon at an upcoming #SouthBayMapNight or #HackNight!

No #SouthBayMapNight tonight. Hope to see you in person at #OpenSanJose Thursday night to celebrate OpenStreetMap’s 20th birthday (please RSVP)!

In the meantime, enjoy this adorable #BabyScreenshot of central San José taken almost 10 years ago on OSM.

Like other former #CodeForAmerica brigades, our old #Meetup group recently lost its CfA sponsorship and got taken over by someone outside the community.
Over the last 10 years, too many people to count have stumbled upon our group through Meetup, come through that door at The Tech or ActionSpot expecting a conventional Silicon Valley coding club, and left with a newfound appreciation for their potential to improve lives through civic tech. We hope you’ll keep coming for more! ❤️
Going forward, you can find out about upcoming OSSJ events through this Mastodon account, Eventbrite, and our Discord server (see profile description).
For the local OpenStreetMap community, #SouthBayMapNight is also cross-posted to the official OpenStreetMap Calendar at https://osmcal.org/ and a different Meetup group at https://www.meetup.com/bay-area-openstreetmappers/

Join tomorrow’s #SouthBayMapNight for a recap of #sotmus2024, plus anything else you want to chat about regarding #OpenStreetMap.
Note that the URL to join the meeting has changed from now on. Please ditch your old bookmark and RSVP for the new link.

#FanimeCon may be over, but the anime is here to stay. According to #OpenStreetMap at least, the South Bay is home to the one of the anime shop industries in California and the entire U.S. (Just 3, but who’s counting.)
Anyways…
Come to tonight’s #SouthBayMapNight and catch a walkthrough of https://dashboard.ohsome.org/ and other tools for creating reports and visualizations that aren’t as pretty as this #ChartJunk.

Have you heard the one about the beach that someone faked in OpenStreetMap in order to capture sand-loving Pokémon? 🙅 Well it isn’t the one beach here in the South Bay. It’s been here the whole time, and it’s really something.
Join us for another South Bay Map Night tonight to learn about OpenStreetMap and OpenHistoricalMap, two projects that get you exploring what’s around you – for real!

Mappers, no #SouthBayMapNight this week – we’ll meet next week, same time, same place. https://www.meetup.com/open-source-san-jose/events/297767078/
However, we are holding this month’s hybrid #HackNight on Thursday, if you’re interested in the broader collection of projects we work on: https://www.meetup.com/open-source-san-jose/events/297434975/
