    From Naeema's family:

    "The situation is getting worse.

There's nothing in the markets, and if there is anything, the prices are very high.

These people stand at the soup kitchen from morning until noon just to get food.

    We are very tired

Everything has disappeared from the market; there are no vegetables."

  19. 🙏Thanks to your donations, we continuously support the mobile #soupkitchen of the FOOD FREE project of our 🇺🇦 partner organization #DobriVchynkyRazom in #Kharkiv. Now, with temperatures as low as -15°C and homes without electricity, a warm meal can be life-saving for pensioners, people with low incomes, and refugees.

  27. Consider planting an extra row for the hungry in your garden this spring

If you’re going to plant fruits, vegetables or herbs this spring, why not grow some extra for your local soup kitchen or pantry?

By JESSICA DAMIANO, March 18, 2025

"If you’re gearing up to plant fruits, vegetables or herbs this spring, why not grow some extra to donate to your local #SoupKitchen or #FoodPantry?

"The national #PlantARowForTheHungry campaign, launched in 1995, has been encouraging home and community gardeners to do just that every year to help feed neighbors in need of fresh food.

"The program was spearheaded in 1995 by Anchorage Daily News garden columnist Jeff Lowenfels, who wrote a column encouraging his readers to plant extra crops and donate their harvests.

"After seeing the impact that his column had on local food donations, Lowenfels partnered with GardenComm International, then known as Garden Writers of America, to enlist garden columnists all over the country to promote the cause in their own communities. Since then, more than 20 million pounds of produce, providing more than 80 million meals, have been donated through the campaign by home gardeners.

"'All of this has been achieved without government subsidy or bureaucratic red tape — just people helping people,' according to organizers on the campaign’s website. And there’s no big advertising campaign, either — just garden columnists and their readers spreading the word."

  29. #Maine: #WatervilleME protesters urge passersby to ‘#DumpTrump

More than 50 people gathered Thursday morning on the sidewalk in downtown Waterville to protest President #Trump and #ElonMusk.

by Amy Calder, February 27, 2025

WATERVILLE — "More than 50 people stood in a snowstorm downtown Thursday, protesting President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s efforts to dismantle government programs and cut the federal workforce.

"The 'Dump Trump' rally was organized by #ElizabethLeonard, an author, historian, and professor emeritus of history at #ColbyCollege, who on Feb. 5 led a rally at a #Tesla charging station less than a mile away.

"News of that protest went viral, prompting dozens of similar protests across the country at Telsa dealerships and charging stations. A Morning Sentinel story about that rally was featured on at least one national television show and in the Boston Globe as part of a subsequent interview with Leonard.

"She said she never thought the Tesla event would have such an impact.
'It’s just proof of the fact that a small group of people can make a huge difference, or you could say, where a butterfly flaps its wings, a breeze goes around the world,' Leonard, 68, said. 'We didn’t expect so many people to pay attention.'

"It was a chilly 29 degrees on Main Street Thursday as motorists beeped their horns in support of the protesters. Someone in a white car yelled 'Go home!' to the group.

"Some protesters held trash bags with signs attached that read 'Dump Trump.' Leonard said she agrees with scholars who say the world is re-living history as it witnesses #fascists rise to power and destroy #democratic governments.

"'This is all how it happens,' she said."

    [...]

"Linda Woods, 73, and Beth Schiller, 68, both of Waterville, protested at the Tesla charging station rally Feb. 5 and were on the street again Thursday. They praised Leonard for starting the #TeslaProtest, which was widely mimicked.

"'I’m just sad that we have to do this,' Woods said. 'I’m tired of standing in the cold.'

"Schiller said she is horrified that people have been #brainwashed into believing the government is 'bad.'

"'They’re going to miss all the good things that government does for all of us when it’s been burned to the ground from #Project2025,' she said, referring to a conservative plan for restructuring government.

"Leonard said she is trying to contact #FederalWorkers in Maine who have been fired from jobs in areas such as the Transportation Safety Administration, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Social Security Administration to bring them together and let them talk and know they are supported. Ruining people’s lives in that way is unacceptable, Leonard said.

"'They’ll all be at the #SoupKitchen, but there won’t be any money for that because the #Medicaid is gone,' she said."

Hot meals 4 Starved Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

Update on October 10th, 2024 by Hani Almadhoun, Organizer

    "Salam, welcome and hello everyone,

"I hope you’re doing well. As I prepare to leave for Atlanta, where we have a major event coming up, I reflect on the significance of raising awareness and funds for Palestine. It’s hard to believe how often we crisscross the country for this cause, but it’s always worth it—it’s a calling. This work, though increasingly difficult, is fueled by the resilience of our people and the steadfast support from allies who have faced these conditions for more than 75 years. You, too, are a part of this marathon for justice, not a sprint, and for that, I thank you.

"Currently, I haven’t been able to reach my family for five days. The Israeli military is conducting a heavy campaign in #NorthGaza, not far from where my parents live. The constant sound of #bombs, #drones, and explosions has become their grim reality. #Hospitals are under siege, and patients, particularly infants in incubators, are left behind. This is the third military campaign in North Gaza in less than a year, and it’s clear that these actions are part of a calculated effort to depopulate the region. But make no mistake—my family and neighbors have no intention of leaving.

"Even amid these horrific circumstances, they choose to stay, preferring to face whatever comes with dignity in their own community.

"In #SouthGaza, prices for basic necessities have tripled, and our kitchen in Al Zawaydah is stretched to its limits. Today, we prepared Romanya, a beloved dish with tahini, eggplant, and bits of meat. Though our budget has doubled, and pots are hard to come by, we pledge to serve more people as long as we can secure the resources.

"Our water deliveries continue—five trucks daily across North Gaza, Khan Younes, and the middle region. These deliveries are lifesaving for tens of thousands of families. In Khan Younes, we brighten the days of displaced children by handing out breakfast pastries and running our classroom, where Ms. Fatma teaches English and serves snacks to eager students. We’ve also distributed olive pickling kits as part of the harvest tradition, keeping hope alive in the face of overwhelming hardship.

"In North Gaza, we’ve had to close both the #school and #SoupKitchen for safety reasons. However, our clinic remains open, treating 30–50 people daily, especially with Kamal Adwan Hospital under siege. My brother Mohamed continues relief efforts in Al Sheikh Radwan, delivering water, bread, and ready-to-eat meals to schools turned shelters. He’s supported by his children, Anas, Hany, and Mai, ensuring we help as many as possible despite the dangerous conditions."

  34. Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

    Update on #Fundraiser, July 4th, 2024 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

"This week was another busy one for us, starting in North Gaza where food is becoming scarcer and more expensive. We have cooked every single day this week and made a few hearty meals: dishes heavy on rice and bread, pasta, and maftool, as well as traditional dips like romanya and the traditional pastry made in the historic Palestinian town of Almjadal. Just think about this: a pound of rice is about five dollars, and each of these big pots we use takes 45 to 50 pounds, not to mention the seasonings and cooking oil, which is now being used to fuel cars because gas is not allowed in. Not even the hospitals have fuel to operate their emergency rooms. My sister dropped off food at the Indonesian Hospital yesterday, and she had to feel her way around the room. Two days before that, it was the same situation at Kamal Adwan Hospital, also in the north. Our family had intended to deliver meals to Gaza City at the Baptist Hospital, but we were told the army is not too far from there, so we chose a different hospital out of an abundance of caution.

"The kitchen in the north has increased its output to cover at least 700 families between the women-led kitchen and the original one. That's conservatively 3,000 people. Additionally, we handed out two dozen food parcels and fresh bread just yards away from the soup kitchen; those went to elderly people and folks who don't usually benefit from the soup kitchen. I’ve come to appreciate how much pride my two siblings take in their work. Chefs Faten and Mahmoud get together every night to plan the following day's menu based on what's available locally and what the locals like. For example, they made Palestinian maftool today and must have used six 50-pound bags of flour to feed the local hunger and ensure that families have a hot meal that is high quality. It costs a lot to serve quality meals that preserve people's dignity. It's a labor of love.

"This week, we sent more than $25,000 to cover all our operations, which include filtered water distribution in three different parts of the #GazaStrip, food parcels, and three bustling soup kitchens. The crew in North Gaza has at least 20 staff, all locals, all people we know, and all people who have lost family members or their homes or both. It has become like a support group for these workers who would not miss a day. Chef Mahmoud had asked three women to take a day off, and they still showed up to work to see the other women. We told him never to do that; we just gave them a makeshift oven and let them bake saaj bread that he can give to people, and now that's what we do. There were a few things we helped with in the north, like getting a boy corrective glasses and some medications for an elderly person who didn’t have the money to buy them.

"Furthermore, the Gaza #SoupKitchen North provided two different families with additional meals of mercy due to having death in the family, one death directly caused by the occupation, a little boy and another death of an elderly woman who passed due to poor health care caused to current conditions.

"Moving to Deir el-Balah, the kitchen made two stews today: one molokhia (the green one) and the other fasolya (white bean). For the past days, we have been making rice and pasta and wanted to change the pace. The day before, our crew of 12 people at the south kitchen baked some zaatar pastries and handed the kids some chocolate or fruit milk to give them some much-needed nutrition. Our kitchen there serves 250 families now and daily gives 300 families drinking water. The crew is coming together well as a few members moved around to Khan Younes, but those folks help us give water there to 600 families a day, something we have been gladly doing for more than two months now. Each water truck costs us around 150 to 200 dollars, which is so worth it.

"We also did water distribution in the north, where my dad helps us. He chooses the areas with the most need and makes sure everyone gets at least a container. He sometimes hands out snacks to the kids as well.

"I feel comfortable working with the crew, and they receive feedback and really get the job done. I know they are not doing okay in any sense of the word, but you enable them to do this work and give them a purpose to wake up every morning and help themselves and countless others. Because you care, we have sustained this operation for five straight months, and we will keep at it until we don't have to. This is our commitment, and I thank you for sticking by us and continuing to talk about #Palestine.

In awe of all of you,
    Hani"

In awe of all of you,
    Hani"

  39. I have #WritersBlock. I'm struggling to find a wonderful and inspiring way to talk about the theme of a #capitalcampaign project. The campaign is to make a #soupkitchen more #accessible, but accessible is not a word that will make #donors' hearts pump. Unconditionally welcome? Barrier-free? Ugh... I have all the content, but I can't find the one-liner. Any ideas from folks who work in this space? #writer #nonprofit #communications
