  1. Olympia, WA is one of my latest favorite songs about… um… my hometown of New York City. I like Rancid’s original but also Molly Tuttle’s version.

Where I grew up: Gomez's "Get Myself Arrested" - youtu.be/9drameYoMek?feature=s

I grew up in the same town/time and boy, I knew so many "plastic scallies" who were trying to get themselves arrested.

Where I live now: "Strange Fish" by Toby Martin - youtu.be/lzhzzkUHGmk?si=4QmjSv

(A fun mix of trad folk vibes & noise)

He's Australian but lived in our village for a while and wrote a whole album about the area. This video shows off the landscape: youtu.be/tV9nT9dPjjU?si=byu_Kx

  3. Oh, this one's real, real easy! I wrote this song about driving in my home state of New Jersey! Asbury Park Press named it in their 10 best songs by NJ artists in 2022. I give you "You Can't Get There from Here in Jersey!"

Last post for the evening. As I said earlier, I now consider Wellington and New Zealand to be home. When I first broke the news to a friend that we were moving here, he pointed me to this song, describing it as New Zealand's unofficial national anthem. Don't know if it's true but it was my (conscious) introduction to NZ music!

Yep, I'm old enough to remember Live Aid at Wembley!

Queen - Hammer To Fall (Live Aid 1985)

Here we stand or here we fall
    History won't care at all
Make the bed light the light
Lady mercy won't be home tonight yeah

I forgot one! Seeing DragonForce at Valhalla in Vivian St - Sam Totman from DragonForce grew up in Wellington, so I'm claiming that as a hometown gig.

One of the most memorable #classical concerts I've seen in Wellington was the premiere of Claire Cowan's Stark Concerto, with Amalia Hall (violin)

Here's a short promo video followed by the first movement:

A couple more Wellington musical memories to finish.

I've been to Camp A Low Hum twice with my partner. I enjoyed the second time (earlier this year) in particular - but the overall highlight was hearing Sleep ∞ Over play at the Journey stage, up in the forest, ten years or so ago.

  15. And on making political lyrics work, I like this even more than The Muttonbirds' A Thing Well Made.

First time I heard it I had no idea what it meant, it slowly all comes together.

The way the music surges and is glorious and beautiful as the lyrics are really, really not at the end of the song. The perspective of someone you aren't supposed to relate to. Few do it this well.

Dalvanius Prime, whom I once met in a nightclub*, is featured in the Ten Guitars documentary.

He's most famous for "Poi E", but here is Dalvanius leading the Pātea Māori Club in another well-known song:

Pātea Māori Club - He Konei Rā: youtube.com/watch?v=ljMQ999Tun

*My list of "famous people met in a nightclub" is very short: it consists (on separate occasions) of Dalvanius Prime and Andrew Little

  17. Ok, if this isn't in your top 5 songs about a council being overthrown by Nick Smith, then what is?

    Anthonie Tonnon - Water Underground

So much political music sucks and I reckon Tono really gets it. It's got to have some level of wit beyond just "this sucks" or "this is cool".

IMO every song on this album is worth multiple close listens.

Here's a song that's kept cropping up throughout my life, the ultimate party strum, an Engelbert Humperdinck B-side that took on a whole new life in Aotearoa:

    MMQ - Ten Guitars: youtube.com/watch?v=earOO31PaM

plus an NZ On Air doco about how has the song has been adopted by Māori in particular: nzonscreen.com/title/ten-guita

... but, with his Liverpool family connections, Dad was a lifetime Liverpool FC fan, so I can't resist posting this:

    Gerry & The Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone: youtube.com/watch?v=OV5_LQArLa #ynwa

Dad suffered through 30 years of Liverpool FC failure after the glory days of the 1970s - I really wish he;'d lived to see the mens team win the Premier League title in 2020

  20. Jupiter Jones
    Kiwifruit

This is a song I wrote in 1982 just after leaving school at a time when growing #kiwifruit was the latest get rich quick scheme. This song was a slightly satirical look at life (at the time) in #Aotearoa #NewZealand
This recording is from 2015 and footage from live perfornamce in 2016.

  21. Gutter Black, Hello Sailor. I am pretty sure this was the first album I bought of a New Zealand rock band. Back in those days (1977), I still had a fair amount of "cultural cringe" about New Zealand music. Thankfully those days are long in the past.

  22. This one for the road between my childhood and adulthood. I always think its about the #Nullarbor. The term being Latin and yes folks a mate of mine managed to reverse his car into a tree whilst crossing. He was a high achiever in such things.
