  1. Soundfonts & SFZ

    5. The samplers of today are nothing like the samplers of years before. Largely, gone are the days of hardware samplers that can play chromatically & polyphonically using real multisamples that include seamless loop points, & cross fading. Samplers that can still do that are almost exclusively found in software plugins. I’ve found only a couple of exceptions.

Sf2 & SFZ are excellent choices!

  2. Soundfonts & SFZ

    3. Both formats support the ability to be modulated through Midi CC — in real time & through automation. If built into the patch, they can be far more expressive than simple midi keynote on/off.

    4. Unlike encrypted formats, the samples themselves are accessible in both formats. Yes, Sf2 is monolithic, but Polyphone, ConvertWithMoss, and others can easily pull them out.

  3. I often see posts by people who look down upon Soundfonts and SFZ. Here’s some food for thought for these legendary underdogs:

    1. Both Soundfonts (sf2) and SFZ are open formats with many open (as well as commercial) tools and plugins. As old as they both are, they are not going extinct.

    2. Both support high quality. Sf2 supports up to 24 bit 48khz, and SFZ supports everything.
