  1. You'd have to say that "State of the Map" is @openstreetmap's franchise for annual conferences. They exist by continent/region and you may recall that I travelled to Salt Lake City last month to talk about my practice at State of the Map US.

The recording of that talk's been published on YouTube. Amazing I got through a very dense deck in 15 minutes even with all the time-filling & embarrassing "um"s.

  2. Last month I gave a talk at the State of the Map US conference about our work migrating @stamen's famous OpenStreetMap-based map styles to a modern platform in partnership with @stadiamaps. Now you can watch the recorded video of the talk on YouTube:

  3. We all start somewhere. @mxn got his start in a Walmart parking lot. Behind every seemingly mundane element on the map, there’s a story to tell. Where will your first OpenHistoricalMap edits be?

  4. You wouldn’t know it from the name, but OpenHistoricalMap can also document the progression of natural features from long before recorded history all the way to the present day. Here’s a workshop about mapping glaciers that @jeffme recently held at State of the Map U.S. in Salt Lake City:

  5. Even with a time slider, if we only focus on mapping stable, “permanent” features, we ignore a lot of important history. @nfgusedautoparts has a plan to start mapping events too. Learn about the next frontier of OHM data modeling and start thinking about the historical events you want to map!

  6. Join tomorrow’s #SouthBayMapNight for a recap of #sotmus2024, plus anything else you want to chat about regarding #OpenStreetMap.

Note that the URL to join the meeting has changed from now on. Please ditch your old bookmark and RSVP for the new link.

  7. Somehow we were able to fit this overview of OpenHistoricalMap’s recent advances in just 15 minutes. All you contributors didn’t make it easy! 😁

  8. I gave a lightning talk about @SmallTownUSA at State of the Map US a few weeks ago. If you're interested in accumulated stats or want a list of the towns still needing some attention, please take a look!

  9. Last week @alan was at the State of the Map talking about how we worked w/ @stadiamaps to modernize our basemaps. (Slides here: sta.mn/qwc)

But there was one map style we didn't attempt to migrate: Watercolor. Updating Watercolor to a vector rendering process would be very challenging... but maybe not impossible? Steve Gifford from Wet Dog Weather wrote up some thoughts about how it might be done with @maplibre

  10. For my talk about @SmallTownUSA I pulled some statistics. The most thrilling part is that only 38 of the 433 posted towns remain unmapped! The list is in my slides [1] but can also be found in this gist [2].

Thanks to anyone who has mapped anything on behalf of the bot. I remain inspired by and grateful for all of it.

  11. Took an ambitious stroll around Salt Lake City yesterday after wrapped. 95° F!

Stayed hydrated (partly on artesian well water served at street level), had such a good breakfast of biscuits and gravy at Café Niche that I’m going back before heading to the airport. Could be corned beef hash.

  12. Back at the airport after a FANTASTIC State of the Map US!

Folks have started posting slides in the wiki [1] and presentation videos will be edited and posted to the OSMUS youtube [2].

If you haven't heard, the plan is to be in Boston for next years event! Details to follow as things get settled.

  13. Giving a talk at 4:00 in the Bonneville room about tools we have to reconcile OSM and GNIS. If mapping with big authoratative datasets is your thing, come see me!

  14. Conference name tag modifications I always make:

    1. Tie some knots in the lanyard string to shorten it, otherwise nobody can see your name tag when you’re sitting at a table.

    2. Write your name on the back! Half the time your name tag will be turned around and you don’t know it.

2a. include a short-ish link where people can quickly look up your contact info!

  15. I have Opinions about conference name tags.

These name tags at State of the Map US are beautifully designed, but the name needs to be bigger! I have to get way too close to people to read their name.

  16. Giving a talk at State of the Map US 2024 on Birds of a Feather: Public Domain and Authoritative Data. At 4 mdt @sotmus

  17. At my hotel and @organicmaps has the pedestrian bridge cut though! Gotta find who added it to OpenStreetMap and send a thank you.

  18. On the ground in Salt Lake City getting maximally amped for State of the Map US 2024! Trains! Talks! Terrific vistas! Lets gooooooo!!!

  19. On Friday I'll speak @ /#SaltLakeCity about the latest of my ; a 10 minute animation that looped atop SalesforceTower while I was February's Midnight Artist. Built with @maplibre + @protomaps + @openstreetmap.

Packing video as no support for an in-town performance ever materialized, remains to be seen if video projection is even an option for my talk.
