  1. weeklyOSM 841 is out, and it's the State of the Map 2026 issue. Group photo from Paris up top.

Also inside: Hiki's Deutsche Bahn Metadata Cleanup project for German railway stations, and Denmark's OSM community making accessible parking spaces their September mapping focus. Both are the kind of quiet data-quality work that shows up later in everyone's routing results.

  4. My impressions from #SotM2026, focusing on #Transitous, public transport, indoor mapping, dynamic (traffic) data, and a few improvements for #KDE applications: volkerkrause.eu/2026/09/05/osm

  5. Mapped a female urinal which I saw at #SotM2026 😅😅😅

    The #OpenStreetMap tags are:

    `amenity=toilets,female=yes,male=no,unisex=no,gender_segregated=yes,toilets:position=seated;urinal`

  6. Vom 28.-30.08. fand die State of the Map 2026 in Paris statt, die Videos sind veröffentlicht: peertube.openstreetmap.fr/

  7. @gregorymarler @Enock4seth Someone asked me what my main takeaways were about #SotM2026 and the topic of this talk was honestly one of them.

  8. This talk could have been titled:
You're killing OpenStreetMap in Ghana (please don't)
    peertube.openstreetmap.fr/w/1E

A good talk, and warning from @Enock4seth about #OpenStreetMap in his country. #SotM2026
Maybe he should join the DWG?

  9. The recording of the talk "CoMaps: How to make a community based map navigation app based on OpenStreetMap" which @dmlls and @gedankenstuecke gave at State of the Map last Sunday is already out!

If you couldn't watch it live, it's available here: peertube.openstreetmap.fr/w/9D

A very big thanks to the @sotm video team for getting those videos done so quickly (and of course also to the rest of the organising team for a job so well done!)

  10. Tomorrow my approximately 10 days long journey by bicycle back from #sotm2026 will enter adventure mode: 7 km of tracks without tracktype in Southern Ardennes north of Sedan.

On the way to there, I already encountered correctly tagged but bumpy tracktype=grade1 tracks (surface missing) and a track which seems to be traced by a drunken couchmapper.

    Wow.

What the person is referring to as a "tantrum" is me originally saying something along the lines of "well I'm not going to contribute to your project then" after they closed my PR. I thought this was a little too harsh so I changed my response to an inquisitive why.

Glad to see where they stand.

  15. Watching recorded talks from #sotm2026 with the AI-generated subtitles. Funny how when people speak with a thick french accent, it thinks they speak in French and _translates_ their English words into French. And for some it uses completely esotheric unreadable languages.

  16. And that's a wrap on SOTM2026 - Paris!!! 🎉

A massive THANK YOU to all our amazing participants - both in-person and online! Your energy was incredible.

Thank you to our speakers, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who made this possible.

We are grateful. We are inspired. Until next time!

  17. What shocked me at #sotm2026 is the gender imbalance in the public and presenters. I counted about 80% men, 20% women in the presenters, and I think that the public was possibly even more strongly biased towards men.

This seems to echo the results of this article from 2019, whose authors surveyed a small sample of contributors (N≈300), and found not only that men represented 87% of them, but also that men were more prolific than women in their contributions. link.springer.com/article/10.1

One anecdotal datapoint was that the only talk where I have been this weekend, which had more women than men attending, was a talk about mapping accessibility.

I obviously haven't been to all the sessions, so I don't know if this issue was discussed somewhere at some point. But I think that this is rarely a sign of a healthy community. Shouldn't such an imbalance be one of the most urgent problems that we should tackle? Is the OSM community hostile to women? At which stage: are they dissuaded to even enter it, or do they quickly leave after joining? Why?

  18. Sad to have missed #SotM2026, particularly as Paris is so easy to get to. I'm away on the family holiday in (very hot) Italy.
I did wear an old Sotm t-shirt today though! Here's me on a beach near Gallipoli.
