New preprint: I got 400 postgrad health management students to use generative AI in an assessment, rather than banning its use. An honest write-up of what worked and what didn't.

The good: most students found it valuable. The structured scaffolding helped reduce anxiety for for adult learners who'd previously been told never to use AI for any assessments.
The less good: most students engaged instrumentally (Which tool is best? How do I prompt?) rather than critically (Which perspectives does this privilege? What are the equity implications? What is this missing?). A single assessment can help normalise AI engagement but probably can't develop deeper critical AI literacy on its own.
If you're designing courses this year and wrestling with AI integration, I hope the case study and design principles we lay out are useful. It's a preprint - feedback welcome.

I found meta-analyses from schools of #medicine, #dentistry, and #psychology, but not from other case-based programs like #law or #business.

Educational researchers are erroneously interpreting non-significant results as the absence of an effect

"of 528 statistically tested hypotheses, 253 (48%) were non-significant. Of these, 142 (56%) were erroneously interpreted to indicate the absence of an effect...For 97 (38%) of non-significant results, such misinterpretations were linked to potentially misguided implications for educational theory, practice, or policy."

Colleagues get surprised when I say I enjoy “marking” and I always think that is because their focus is wrong; I see it as “giving feedback and feedforward” rather than just marking or grading. This blog has many excellent tips on providing effective #feedback and #feedforward - despite the clunky name. I think seeing the process for what it really is could help lecturers get more out of it. #SoTL

BTW I’m looking for ways to share what Kalyn Owens (chemistry) and I (early childhood) contributed to #SoTL years ago that documents the effect of co-construction of understanding, representing to learn, and the reciprocity of #documentation and #metacognition in first year general #chemistry. It’s free and been online at my site for 14 years now. Trouble is it needs a group to construct the meaning from a slide show of #visiblelearning Can’t just read it. #Learning
