Yes, I know. And endless strife.
SX separates #FOSS from the movement of people that creates it. FOSS is code/software + an open license. Period.
Under SX, where solution development involves software creation, FOSS is the end of the supply line. FOSS software is a SX artifact. Its only purpose is to serve the formulated solution that was the reason to start programming. And that solution in turn is only meaningful to the extent it fulfills people's needs.
Including the creator, if they need sustenance to continue their good work. This is the crux. It isn't there for FOSS creators, its an inherently unsustainable field.
Separating FOSS software from those creating it allows focus on healthy processes, that do not burnout their participants and they leave.
Here SX defines #SOSS, Sustainable open social systems..

It is the right ask though. The ask is: What are ALL the moving gears that make sustainable #FOSS (i.e. #SOSS) be produced, and in an entire healthy technology ecosystem at that.
My investigation around commons based social dynamics started when I had basically given up "trying to herd cats" at #SocialHub where it was already clear that most people didn't much beyond the interest for their own #ActivityPub project, to mingle in the discussions. I mentioned at the time in various thread "Do you want 'community-of-action' or just a mere discussion forum. But even for those questions there's hardly anyone interested.
I knew all this already from my time facilitating Humane Tech Community - now dormant, waiting for value at https://community.humanetech.com - but needed to more deeply understand.
The notion of #FSDL in its double meaning of #FreeSoftware development lifecycle, and #Fediverse solution delivery lifecycle rose from there, but also the need for a new adoption model.

Why #Discourse is NOT going closed-source in an age of #AI #LLM ..

Totally. I am myself as technical person stuck in Yunohost because of all kinds of upgrade issues. The "bring together" on a holistic basis is exactly what I do applied research on with Social experience design i.e. #SX.
In the case of #FOSS that means transitioning (or rather evolving) towards #SOSS. And considering the entire #FSDL, which either stands for #FreeSoftware development lifecycle. Or for #Fediverse solution delivery lifecycle.
Under SX software development involves service development, delivery, and exchange. Within commons based ecosystems and across them, to the broader public.
In SOSS + FSDL it is natural that you try to attract a #UX designer if you need one and not just sighed "If only a UX designer became a contributor", which I've often seen people do.

For those who chimed in to join the #brainstorming and want to be nerdsniped potentially you may ponder that..
♟️ #Chess is a great example of an #EmergentSystem.
🌱 Recipe for #Emergence of chess #game
- [chess ingredients here]
And then to continue onwards and think how the relationship is between #FOSS individuals who give their all-in best-efforts for world improvement, make real sacrifices, and who gift their 2 cts with best-intentions, still are faced with uncomfortable questions.
To turn that into solution-orientation we must find a good recipe, and note down #recipe ingredients..
🌱 Recipe for Sustainable open social systems i.e. #SOSS

Recensie: Supersister – T3iO ★★★★

"Welcome #socialcoder. Ahead of you lies an adventure. To explore with others innovative new ways to collaborate and create value together. We focus on the delivery of Sustainable open social systems—elevating #FOSS projects to become #Sustainable #opensocial systems, i.e. #SOSS initiatives—that provide a means for people to earn a living in #freesoftware development and in the areas where they are most passionate. This introduction provides an overview of our #movement."

Being "commons based" means being able to sustain responsible, healthy evolution and natural growth.
-
I posted on this notion of #SOSS before, with a meme attached..

There's nothing wrong with #FOSS, but it only provides part of the solution as long as the #Sustainability angle is not given due attention to.
Esp. with disruptive inhumanely introduced #AI #LLM technologies, new major threats to the #FreeSoftware community are surfacing, and giving attention to this subject matter is more important than ever.

Let's zoom in on a particular area of the commons: the #FreeSoftware movement and their #FOSS deliverables, where a strong #WorkingInPublic credo dominates. The noble focus is on offering open technologies, software and systems. But in their quest to uphold #SoftwareFreedom the overlooked aspect is #sustainability. The ability to not only sustain oneself, but also by extension the creative #commons one is part of. The commons is an entirely chaotic grassroots environment with very specific social dynamics that are not properly accounted for. Instead top-down "herding of cats" governance models that work in regular business environments, are attempted. These may work, but only in small organizational settings, and NOT at scale where they break down.
FOSS in this definition is NOT commons-based. For that we need #ChaordicCommons where FOSS is the deliverable and #SOSS initiatives the engines of delivery, #FSDL (Free software development lifecycle) supply chains.

👁️ #SX focus shift..
Attn: This is now an 🫂 outreach channel of Social coding commons, under custodianship and tender care of humane tech community gardeners.
Specifically this a 🪵 #dreamlog..
My personal account has moved (temporarily) to @humanetech in a custodianship (janitoring) 🎩
With my support by @nlnet ending, how I continue to foster and nourish my work, depends on 🌱 sustenance I manage to find, as I am out of money totally.

I can read this in 2 ways. One I agree with, and the other I'm putting to the challenge.
Under Mindfulness core principle of Social experience design there exists no "winning", only Progress matters. Although #SX only considers #FOSS as the software, an SX artifact. Software doesn't win either, it fulfills needs (or it should).
Other interpretation, that FOSS projects cannot be self-sustainable in most cases. Well, here #SOSS comes around. Coding is social.

#ThoughProvoker :blobhyperthink:
The (emergent) strategy of the #FOSS movement as a whole is "Make FOSS, change the world". And it worked. 9 trillion of value to the corporate business world and big tech. You can do a lot with that money, and indeed change the world.
-
I would like to propose SOSS: Sponsored Open Source Software.
If your company uses OSS, you sponsor the project $100/year.
Not per seat, or per team, just $100/year, all in.
- 30 developers using Ghostty? $100
- 300,000 engineers using tmux? $100, totalYou audit the OSS you use (OSS tools for this would quickly emerge, $100, thank you). You set up a bunch of annual $100 sponsorships. Everyone wins.
This guarantees the longevity of that tiny piece of code propping up your bank.

What is "working in commons"?
Right now when saying "I work in the commons" the person standing next to you with the Google T-shirt nods approvingly, while carrying your created wealth. 😄
-
Given a "united commons" and "participative software development".
What is a Project?
An example. You start "Hello world" project, simplest possible. And then - because its a typescript project - you do npm install.
Now what is your Project?
From #FOSS perspective nothing much changed. It compiles and runs.
From #SOSS perspective you've just interwoven your project deep into a huge grassroots chaotic commons, and are exposed to the #sustainability risks of that decision.

FOSS == ✅️ software artifact
FOSS != ❌️ software project
SOSS == 🌱 sustainable software project -
Totally. I started #SocialCoding movement at https://coding.social and https://discuss.coding.social
Coding is social and if working on social networking solutions "social coders social code the social code" 😅
Exploring some fascinating subjects, like Social experience design #SX, Sustainable open social software / systems / services #SOSS, Free software development lifecycle #FSDL and hedonic peer production (a method that the movement 'self-services' i.e. dogfoods, among others.

If you are in tech, then it is time to https://unionize.fyi ✊

We’re campaigning for safer streets - fighting London’s Tower Hamlets Council and Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s crazy plans to remove school roads and street calming across the borough.
