As the story goes, Natsume Soseki was said to have translated "I love you" from English to Japanese as "Tsuki ga kirei desu ne" (The Moon is beautiful, isn't it?). Quite pretty, but why would he have done that, and did it ever happen? I put together all the English-language sources I could find into a comprehensive article exploring the story and how it is understood today. A long read.
