Cork’s Social Life Spills Onto the Street
The Long Valley Bar is always busy, and I love seeing interesting characters sitting at the tables outside.
The Long Valley Bar has been serving Cork since 1842 and is famous for its traditional “combination” sandwiches – hence the “Plain Comb” on the menu board. These legendary sandwiches typically contain a hearty mix of meats, cheese, and pickles, and have remained virtually unchanged in recipe for over a century. The pub’s sandwiches have achieved almost mythical status among Cork locals and visitors alike, with many considering them the best pub grub in Ireland. The establishment has retained its original Victorian fittings and atmosphere, making it not just a place to eat, but a living piece of Cork’s social history.

The Cat in the big smoke
There’s something delightfully peculiar about finding a cat on a lead. I spotted these two characters taking a break near Camden Town in London. The scene just screamed to be photographed. The smoke caught in the sunlight and the cat’s nonchalant pose, how could I resist?
It’s a candid shot, of course, and as the photo was taken in 2022. I wonder if they were and are still living in London?
I searched and found this TikTok video from later in 2022, so they were still around there in October that year!

The remains of the pier where people boarded boats to take them to the Titanic and other ships. 123 people left Cobh here to board the Titanic that was moored off Roche’s Point, at the mouth of the harbour.
In March 2018, plans were approved for an observation walkway and ticket kiosk, but thankfully they were rejected in April 2019.
