Two Screens, One Corner
The man on the corner had his phone in one hand and a child's white puffa coat over the other arm, which tells you roughly how the morning was going. Across the square a woman stood next to the brick wall in the same posture, head down, thumb moving. They weren't together, so the matching was just chance. Twenty years ago they'd have stood there bored. Nobody under that age remembers a world without mobile screens. My first one was the Samsung Galaxy S2. I loved that phone! -

Rearing to Go at the Dingle Races
Number 9 had clearly decided that the racing could wait. I was wandering around at the Dingle Races and right in front of me this dark bay racehouse reared up on it's hind legs while the poor jocket and two men tried to calm the animal. Derry “Elvis” Coughlan is a local taxi driver in Cork. Here he was on St. Patrick's Street in 2021. He was walking towards an older man with bags of shopping who would probably need a lift home. Here we are in 2026, and people are still denying that COVID-19 was a problem, while there’s a screenshot going around of a tweet by an “MD” who predicted that everyone who got the vaccine would be dead by the end of 2025. We’re still around. LOL.

There’s no such thing as a safe tan
The What’s Up Docs podcast from the BBC is an entertaining but factual podcast about health presented by two doctors, Chris and Xand van Tulleken (brothers and twins!) who find out to their dismay that they were wrong about the dangers of getting a nice healthy colour from the sun.
A tan occurs when UV radiation damages skin cells, causing them to produce more melanin as a protective response. This process involves DNA damage to skin cells, which can accumulate over time and potentially lead to skin cancer.
Sunburn is obviously harmful and painful. Even one blistering sunburn in childhood can double your lifetime risk of melanoma.
It’s a bit late for my Irish readers, as we had cloudless skies and a hot sun last week. Temperatures reached 25C where I was, so I slapped on the factor 50 sunscreen and made sure I was wearing a hat when I was outside. Many years ago, a neighbour died of skin cancer at the age of 52, only a few years older than I am now.
The Met Éireann UV Index page will show you what the UV index in Ireland is. If it’s 3 or over, you should be covering up with clothing or sunscreen. It’s quite alarming that the difference between a clear sky and a cloudy sky is 1-2 or 8-10 on that index.

The Wild Beauty of Coumeenoole Beach
Coumeenoole Beach at the end of the Dingle Peninsula is a favourite spot on a drive around that headland. It’s dangerous to swim there, but it’s such a picturesque area we always end up there every time we visit the area.
Coumeenoole Beach gained international fame after being featured in the 1970 film “Ryan’s Daughter,” directed by David Lean, which showcased its dramatic cliffs and sweeping scenery to audiences around the world
