  1. The Last Days of the Loretto Extension

The ugly monstrosity that was an extension to the Loretto School in Youghal, in 2023. It was finally demolished in January this year.

  2. Evening Falls on the North Side

The tower of St. Anne’s Church has recently been renovated but this photo is from 2022, when it was still gritty. It looks all shiny now but I think it looked better back then. The clock faces all got a nice lick of paint though which is welcome!...

  4. A Cut Above, Two Metres Apart

Remember how impossible it was to get a hair cut during lockdown? Afterwards for some time the barber or hair dresser would have to wear a mask while grooming your hair. This was in February 2022, when we were still paranoid about COVID-19....

  6. A Leg-up at Dawstown

The man in the blue jacket has both hands on the jockey's left boot, mid heave, and number 37 is halfway between earth and saddle. It's neither one place nor the other. I love the awkward physics of a leg-up. It looks ungainly until you remember it's the only sensible way to get a small, light human onto an animal that tall without a mounting block. I have no idea how this jockey and horse did on the day. The photo is from 2024.

  7. Flamenco Frills on a Valencian Pavement

Valencia in late October had just been rinsed by a quick shower, and the pavement was still glossy when this little party walked past me. The two women had gone all-in on the traje de flamenca. The ruffles stacked like waves, fresh blooms pinned into their hair, and a peach-coloured shawl folded neatly over one arm. The gentlemen kept it simpler: black suits, red ties, and what look like cofradía medallions hanging from green ribbons.

  8. House Sparrows, brown little birds hiding between the branches. Common birds here in the Netherlands, but always fun to photograph when they sit still for a moment.

  10. Fresh Fruits and Fortune

I went out one morning to photograph Palafrugell, walking around the town, exploring the streets. It’s a small town with narrow road and tall buildings, with a few public squares dotted around. Near one is a vegetable market where I spotted a man buying a lottery card.

The ONCE lottery, seen in the photo, is unique in Spain for being operated by the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles, an organisation founded in 1938 to support the blind and visually impaired. Many of the lottery vendors, like the one pictured, are themselves visually impaired, making each ticket sale a contribution to social inclusion and support for people with disabilities.

  11. Urban Decay in Green and White

I spotted this scene while walking up the hill next to the harbour in the old town of Puerto del Carmen. The peeling paint of the window frame attracted my attention, but then the modern signs stood out in contrast to the white painted wall. Just one of those things I like about looking around.

  12. The cat and the boats

A cat sits on the slipway in the old town of Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote, surveying the damage to a boat.

Or maybe he’s just enjoying the last rays of the sun on a warm January evening.

  13. The Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin and the lights of the Convention Centre Dublin fight for attention. Red and Green lights reflect off the River Liffey on a warm October evening earlier this year.
