  2. Sony A7II + 50mm f/1.8 raw footage — creamy bokeh, shallow DOF and great low-light character. Perfect lens/camera test for filmmakers & photographers who love pure, ungraded clips to study. 35 mm film shot in a medium format folder camera, had some frame spacing issues on winding near the end of the roll because I think it was pulling too hard without having the sprockets to advance film. I should give it a go again!

  4. Missed #TLRTuesday last week, I need to shoot new stuff again, running low on usable shots. What a good problem to have!

  5. A not so #SilentSunday where I just recorded a quick live stream walking through my film processing workflow in Darktable and the resulting photo (I'll likely reprocess).

I want to make a more structured video down the line but wanted a quick practice today and NOTHING worked. I couldn't find my scans so I rescanned the strips which is way more painful and then no fruitful combination of my camera/audio/desktop/laptop/obs combo would work but at this point I was too stubborn to give up. Apologies for the audio quality if you do watch it: https://makertube.net/w/wioAL4ux6knqWCXZamQn1m

  6. #TLRTuesday is back to a couple winters ago when my friend @aaronberjohn and I went around town on a dreary frigid day to make some portraits. I recently re-edited the photos now that I can process negatives a bit better and trying to follow @bosak's advice of finding the image in the shot, instead of just muted grays (thanks!), still learning and a ways to go.

  7. #TLRTuesday has been all Black&White Mamiya today, here's a touch of color from the Rolleiflex with a lens made way before color photography was available.

Edit: as @sree pointed out color photography is older than 1935. I meant to say before it was available for this lens but that may not be true either, the first Kodachrome is a contemporary. What is true is that this lens was definitely not designed for color photography as a primary format. The more you know 🌈

  8. So I experimented with loading some 35 mm film into my Mamiya Six to see if I could get some "panoramic" images. I learned a lot but I'm also very happy with some of these happy accidents.

The view window in the back jostled open (despite the leather case) and leaked through enough light to create the orb but not enough to just burn it altogether. The spots are from few tiny remnants after the wash, so small that I didn't notice, but I might wash the film again.

I call this one, "That's no Moon". I'll post a few more in this thread.

  9. #TLRTuesday

I really liked this little door/patio area with all the geometric shapes but with some organic greenery reflected in the glass. I couldn't figure out a good framing to highlight that juxtaposition; didn't want to lurk too long and freakout the residents.

  10. Revisiting my not-so-successful roll of infrared for #MonochromeMonday.

Slowly editing photos over time feels like a "failed to keep up with backlog" for me, but I'm trying to turn that into "stretching the good experience longer while learning over time", it's a difficult mental jujitsu.

That's no lo-fi filter and brushes creating an effect for scratches and sprocket hole marks, that's just a really scratched and dirty negative and terrible exposure. I mean, it's all intentional art!

  12. #FensterFreitag

Stuff just keeps piling up, processing older photos is an escape.
I normally keep the aspect ratio of the medium in my crop but trying an homage: "Dayhawks" (only if you squint hard, forget what Nighthawks looks like, and are really stretching your imagination).

This negative looks all beat up and scratched up by the bear. Not sure what happened (🐻). I'll try to clean and scan again maybe but not sure where the scratches would have come from.

  14. This #TLRTuesday photo is from one of my first test rolls with the 90 year old Rolleiflex. I shot some challenging scenes with high dynamic range and opportunity for losing contrast with bright transitions.
The camera is an absolute champ, one of the lightest I own, and a great conversation starter (people are very interested and most want their photo taken after the chat). I need to be out and about with it more!

(sorry for the re-post, had to change visibility)

  15. #SilentSunday

Infrared film is quite wild (even though it didn't turn out right) it looks magical. At first glance this looks like a winter scene but there was no snow. The trees are green not white, the water is light to deep turquoise not black but somehow the rocks come out about what they look like.
It's been a good idea to visit this roll after a bit and see the images without the initial disappointment of mistakes-made compounded by non-ideal weather. I'll have a few more to post later.

Shot exactly two years ago and finally developed last week. I love the havoc of colors that come from light leaks. You get double the fun on self-loaded film since you can catch something funky at the beginning and the end of the roll since I use a daylight loader. This was shot on Vision3 500 Tungsten-light balanced film without a warming filter on a very cool/gloomy day so the burst of warm color was a nice surprise.

  17. I had a nice discussion last week (?) with some film folks about how we're looking for a more positive spirit event like #FolderWeek to get us to shoot and share more work with vintage film cameras and we settled on TLRs (Twin Lens Reflex) cameras. So here's the inaugural #TLRTuesday post (hashtag is still under work-shopping)?

Also an homage to #TrainTuesday, I sadly don't have enough regular train access to keep going, but maybe someday.

  18. Another heavily underexposed image here but I really like the soft light highlighting this young tree amongst the large mature trees. I do have some better exposures that I'll share as I work on them, but somehow the poorly exposed ones are the ones I'm most drawn to.

  19. I'll post a few more from this roll of infrared. This frame was severely underexposed but I really like the scene. While it's really not showcasing infrared prominently (except the dark sky) it does have an other wordly glowy feel to it. Sometimes you just like a thing and it doesn't make objective sense, this is one of those.

Interesting off screen note: there were wet foot prints from someone who had gone swimming in the lake not too long before I arrived. That water was 40°F / 4.5°C at best 🥶

  20. Well this was my first roll of Infrared with the R72 filter. I didn't get everything in time to do a practice run before I took it on a trip and that really shows in the roll. I also didn't get bright sunny days but I had already loaded the film so went ahead and shot it over a couple of days. And given how wildly off the exposures were I had to stand develop to try to salvage it but I really should have pushed by 2 stops instead. Fair to say that I'm not happy with what I got.
But it is still a fun learning experience, got to be in the mountains, and look at those white trees!!!

  23. One of the (many) things I really like about the Shedd Aquarium is how the architecture and even the lighting ties back in with aquatic life.

If I lived closer I would utilize my membership way more and also sign up (to the long waiting list) of volunteer scuba divers that help clean the tanks.

  24. Two different takes on #FensterFreitag from the test roll on the Rolleiflex a couple of years ago. I only processed one photo after developing and scanning to make sure the camera worked before heading out on a trip. It's fun to go back and look at photos you don't quite remember taking.
