“The Hansens were employed at Glenormiston Station in the Channel Country, and from time to time would visit sacred sites in the region to maintain them and retell their songs and stories. The people of the station referred to this as “going walkabout” as if it was trivial, but it was an important part of maintaining their connection to Country. Isabel was brought up on that Country”

Who lived here? He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tiers and grew a good crop
Now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grainToday's SongLines: Elton John, "Empty Garden" (1982). My favorite EJ song. About the death of John Lennon; it never says so, but does call the killer an insect…Contra many lyrics sites, it's not "tears," people; he weeded out the TIERS. In, you know, a garden?

In dearth or in excess
Both the slave and the empress
Will return to the dirt, I guess
Naked as when they cameToday's SongLines: Fleet Foxes, "Montezuma" (2010). The band is as famous for shimmering harmonies as principal Robin Pecknold's lyrics are for elusive allusions. These lines anyway seem clear enough. And the whole thing is just drop-dead gorgeous:

Down Main Street after midnight, brand new pack of cigs
A fresh one hangin' from her lips, a beer between her legs
She'd ride down to the river and meet with all her friends
The road goes on forever and the party never endsToday's SongLines: Robert Earl Keen, Jr., "The Road Goes On Forever" (1989). This hard-partying Texas troubadour retired last year. But among other faves he leaves one of the great beautifully compressed outlaw ballads:

I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat nowYesterday's SongLines: Sam Fender, "Seventeen Going Under" (2021). Yes I posted it in December already. Sue me. Love this anthem about life at 17 in a tough town in the NE of England. Here's a great live version in front of hundreds of blitzed kids that know every word and are literally jumping for joy. What happens when he thinks the song is done is pure nuts magic:
