  4. Congratulations to Richard Gonzalez, who’s retiring after 23 years of service with Athens Services.

Solid-waste disposal is one of the most essential services in any well-run community. The fact that It Just Works here, without residents and businesses having to think much about it, is a testament to the professionalism and hard work of Richard and team. Enjoy your retirement!

  5. Reposted from @gogreen_toaks and @cityofthousandoaks: Clean up the yard and the garage and take advantage of Free Landfill Day on Saturday, March 15th, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Calabasas Landfill (5300 Lost Hills Road, Agoura Hills). Bring your excess trash, unwanted bulky items, landscape trimmings, or home remodel waste, and dispose of it for free.

The event is open to Thousand Oaks residents only; a valid ID or utility bill is required for proof of residency. Residents can bring up to two loads per event. For a list of acceptable items, visit toaks.gov/landfillday.

  6. VRSD received an emergency use permit to accept debris from the recent Mountain Fire. Because Toland Road does not accept hazardous waste, debris is first cleared of toxic materials and then "burrito wrapped" to avoid any possible groundwater contamination. This policy worked well after the 2017 Thomas fire, and will continue to protect groundwater supplies after this and future fires. (2/2)

  7. Grateful to the board of the Ventura Regional Sanitation District for naming me to another 1-year term as its chair. The district provides wastewater treatment services (for which Thousand Oaks is a customer) and operates solid-waste facilities including the Toland Road landfill between Santa Paula and Fillmore. Toland Road is the only public landfill in Ventura County.

VRSD will see some management turnover in the coming year with the pending retirement of several key staff members, including general manager Chris Theisen. The recruiting process is already under way. (1/2)

  8. A recent photojournalism piece showcased a #solidwaste #cleanup initiative of Tonlé Sap Lake by young #khmers in Pursat Province, #Cambodia. Publicising a new generational awareness of the fight against #wastepollution. Conversely, annual volunteer waste collection efforts, sadly have had little net benefit, e.g., the Khmer nation's 2020 #wastemanagement #EPI issue category score was 0.0, w/a global ranking = 133/180. #p2 #SDG11 #SDG12
