Years ago, with my then-host in the USA, John C. Moser, I described the #myrmecophilous #phoretic #mite #Histiostoma #blomquisti as a new #species (S.F.Wirth & J.C.Moser, 2010).
In a recent #sciencecomm. #article, I reconstructed its #biology, being found on active #queens of ant #Solenopsis #invicta, from my current perspective (S.F.Wirth,2026).

Red Imported Fire Ant (Insect & Beetle Figurine Playset by Toymany)
Before I start this review I must thank @Kenc and our friends at Toymany for passing along this review sample. Insects have been my specialty since the late 1990s so I was excited they produced a set of them! I had originally intended for this review to come out in late September, but it was delayed when our Blog content was briefly removed. Luckily, it actually goes well with our ‘spooky’ […]

#Fire #ants arriving in #Europe/#Italy is big problem.
"The invasive ant #Solenopsis #invicta is established in Europe"
Quote: "We show that half of the #urban areas in Europe are already suitable and that #climate #warming expected under current trends will favor the expansion of this #invasive #ant."

These blocky-headed girls are tropical fire ants, Solenopsis geminata. They feed more on grains than other fire ants, and their heads and jaws are more robust for milling seeds. Also, not nearly so aggressive as the red imported fire ants that plague Texas.
Photographed at El Yunque, Puerto Rico.

I figured y’all could use more ants. These are Solenopsis thief ants from Texas.

#Solenopsis invicta, an invasive species that is ubiquitous in the Gulf South of the United States. These #FireAnts are the top trigger of venom-induced anaphylaxis in my patients. Here are a worker #ant (left) and #queen (right) from around the hospital this weekend.
