  3. Europe wants astronauts to produce food from their own pee. To cut reliance from Earth supplies, ESA and Solar Foods explore making protein from air, microbes, and urine.

  4. I also think that solar power will also be used in food production. It will be needed for creating fertilizer. And more directly it can be used to create food from air and water using hydrogen oxidizing bacteria. Solar Foods is an example of a company doing this solarfoods.com/ (again not endorsing them). If this kind of food production becomes widespread, it will require a lot of solar panels.

  5. I'm becoming more convinced that solar panels will begin to push out farmland. One reason this could happen is it's possible to use solar power to create food. A company in Finland, Solar Foods, uses a bacteria to produce a protein from CO2 scrubbed from the air and from hydrogen which is hydrolyzed from water. The power for this activity is from solar panels. From what I've read so far, they will be able to produce more food per area with solar panels than would be possible with traditional agriculture.

This may or may not be a good thing. Perhaps solar panel fields with grazing animals would be better than monocultures of wheat or corn. But it would be a huge transition, so it could be good to prepare for.

  6. Tykkäätkö proteiinista?

"Soleiinia voi käyttää ruoanlaitossa esimerkiksi korvaamaan lihaa ja maitoa. Keksinnön juuret ovat LUT-yliopiston ja VTT:n tutkimustyössä."

  7. Pärjäätkö ilman lehmää?

"Käytännössä menetelmällä voidaan siis valmistaa maitoa ilman lehmiä, mikä vähentää maidontuotannon päästöjä. Proteiinilla voidaan korvata myös lihaa ja kananmunia."

  8. So let's feature some of these #AlternativeProtein innovators, 3 different types of businesses from 3 continents.

This is #SolarFoods from Finland, a company making ‘Food Out Of Thin Air’.

"On the outskirts of Helsinki, a pioneering factory is harvesting natural, scalable proteins all from fermented bacteria."

  9. Riittääkö ruokaa?

"Uusia ruokatuotteita kehittävä suomalainen Solar Foods -yhtiö on avannut tehtaan Vantaalla. Kyseessä on Solar Foodsin mukaan ensimmäinen yhtiön valmistamaa soleiiniproteiinia tuottava kaupallisen mittakaavan tehdas."

  10. #Soleil from #SolarFoods looks amazing. Commercially available in the first half of 2023 if all goes to plan.

  11. The #solarfoods concept sounds like a really good idea: turning CO2 into #food, including protein, using electricity instead of plants.

    solarfoods.fi/

Surprisingly, I think it makes a lot of sense from an energy perspective. #Photosynthesis is much less efficient than #solar cells, so we can save a lot of resources that way! It's totally different from using solar panels to generate artificial light to then use for growing plants, which turns light into other types of energy twice and compounds the inefficiencies of both solar cells and photosynthesis.

It also disconnects food production from ethical problems related to #agriculture, like the suffering of trillions of #insects killed with #pesticides. (A lot on insects also suffer in "natural" environments from non-anthropic causes, but this problem can probably be treated separately).
