  1. RE: spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237

2 years ago, April 8, 2024: I witnessed the total solar eclipse at Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro). We could see totality through thin clouds. It was a relief because it was overcast all morning. Cumulus clouds were slower to form than forecast because they depend on solar heating, which was diminished by the eclipse. We couldn't see the corona lines like I saw in 2017. But everyone noticed an enormous prominence (solar flare) peeking around the Moon. #SolarEclipse2024 #astronomy #weather

  3. A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I stopped at Arizona's Meteor Crater. It's officially Barringer Crater, after the man who first proposed it might be an impact crater, tried to understand its geology, but died before he could prove it. Later it became the first proven impact site after geologist Eugene Shoemaker noticed its geology was like Nevada's nuclear test blast craters, but vastly bigger. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112265 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

  5. A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I posted a picture (which I took the previous day) of the Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton, Texas. The crater is 8mi/13km wide and US Hwy 385 goes through the middle of it. But the highway is the only spot you can see it since the rest of the crater is private property. So it was easy to keep the stop quick, take a few pictures and continue the drive. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

  7. A year ago I was on the drive back home on the #SolarEclipse2024 road trip. From the far point of the trip in Houston, I made some more #space related stops on the way home: Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton TX, NSF's Very Large Array radiotelescope near Socorro NM and Meteor Crater near Flagstaff AZ. Overnight stops were at Austin TX, Las Cruces NM, Flagstaff AZ and Brigham City UT. #astronomy #space #spacegeek #travel

  9. @TidalFlats @KrajciTom my astronomy club just informed me of this exquisite work.

Last year’s corona really stuck in my head as different. I immediately thought “brushed hair”. 2017 reminded me more of flower petals

  11. One year ago, April 10, 2024... 2 days after #SolarEclipse2024, I visited NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. That part of my itinerary was intended to be an easy success in case the weather turned the eclipse viewing into a failure. Fortunately, that succeeded too. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112252 #astronomy #NASA #space #spacegeek #travel

  13. One year ago, the day after the April 8, 2024 total #SolarEclipse2024, I continued south from Dallas to Houston to see NASA Johnson Space Center, with a quick peek before the visitor center closed for the day. I returned for more there the next day. That day was the road trip's farthest point with dinner at the coast in Galveston. After that everything was on the journey back home. #spacegeek #travel

  15. One year ago... #weather is what you get. Forecasted storms were late, cleared just enough just in time to see #SolarEclipse2024 totality in Mesquite TX. Since cumulus clouds grow with daytime solar heating, the partial eclipse leading up to totality apparently cooled the air enough to inhibit them. Not everyone was as lucky that day. Spring is unpredictable - actual cloud cover along the path of totality differed from average expectations. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237 #eclipse #astronomy #travel

  17. One year ago, April 8, 2024, was the total #SolarEclipse2024 across North America. I watched from the Totality Dallas festival in Mesquite, Texas. Located at a regional park in the eastern Dallas metro, it had longer totality (4 minutes) than the big sold-out event in downtown. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112236 #astronomy #travel

Man, a year ago today we stood in the shadow of the moon.

What a long, strange trip that was.

  21. One year ago was the day before the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024. I got to Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro) around mid-day to try to arrive ahead of the crush of traffic as everyone came from everywhere to the path of totality. Even before I found a place to get lunch, I met a news crew preparing to cover the next day's festivities in downtown. I was interviewed by AP aerospace reporter Marcia Dunn. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112231 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel

  23. A year ago I was on the way to see the Total #SolarEclipse2024. With snowfall expected to close I-84 in eastern Oregon's Blue Mountains, I had to leave a day early on the road trip to stay ahead of it. The snow followed just behind me until the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico where the storm weakened enough that a slightly late 9:30am departure allowed the sun to melt snow & ice on the pass on I-40. Overnight stops were in Boise ID, Price UT, Albuquerque NM and Wichita Falls TX. #astronomy #travel

  25. A year ago today, on my road trip to see the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024 in Mesquite (east of Dallas) TX, I stopped in Moriarty NM for a quick visit to the Southwest Soaring Museum. So many gliders to see, so little time... But then I had to hit the road again. An eclipse waits for no one. avgeek.social/@ikluft/11222577 #aviation #pilot #avgeek

  31. On April 8, I drove to St. Louis, before heading south.

After St. Louis, traffic increased tremendously, from all of the people driving to see the eclipse.

I originally planned to watch the eclipse in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but I decided to stop in Sparta, Illinois, instead, due to the heavy traffic.

Sparta was still well within totality, and the town had a nice park where I could comfortably view the eclipse.

  32. In early April, I watched the 2024 Solar Eclipse.

I observed the eclipse in the small town of Sparta, Illinois, on April 8.

While I was there, I recorded video of the mid-day twilight created by the eclipse, and the reactions of onlookers gathered in Sparta’s City Park.

  37. 2/? More images of the total solar eclipse over North America on April 8, 2024.

1st img: moon covers ~45-50% of the sun, it's at the very edge of the the largest sun spot and it's about to cover it. 2nd img: moon covers ~85-90% of the sun. 3rd img: moon covers ~95% of the sun, which is now a thin crescent. 4th img: moon is covering ~97-98% of the sun, which looks like a very thin crescent.

Next posts will have images during totality.

  39. Relive the 2024 solar #eclipse!

    youtu.be/GRAWtGzcnM8

We, well mostly @therocketfuture, finally got a video edited together along with some fun graphs. Turns out I'm not very good at #matplotlib, but it was a fun challenge. We were up in #burlington #vermont on #lakechamplain for it.

Not to spoil anything, but when the sun goes away the temperature goes down, surprise!!

  41. City of Dallas posted "Totality Dallas Festival Recap" from April 8 #SolarEclipse2024. I attended that event, which was held at Samuell Farm Park in Mesquite. (Dallas owns the park. But it's southeast outside Dallas.) We had 4min 8sec totality. youtube.com/watch?v=tP1jy2HEbV #astronomy #travel

  43. A bit late but better than never: Sequence of images of the first partial phase of the recent solar eclipse over North America on April 8, 2024. The moon slowly covers the sun as it goes from being perfectly round to a very thin crescent. Location was Mazatlan, Mexico.

1st img: sun before the eclipse starts. 2nd img: moon starts to appear, top left of the sun. 3rd img: sun is ~10-15% covered. 4th img: sun is ~30-35% covered.
