This Women's Day, we celebrated Joan Arwa Ogwang. When Joan opened a solar bakery in Kisumu, Kenya, she had no experience, no guarantees, just a Lytefire solar oven, an unshakeable work ethic, and the drive to overcome every obstacle.
Three years later, she runs East Africa's first profitable solar bakery. 9 employees. 400kg of baked goods a month. 180% revenue growth in one year.

Today I used my solar oven(s) for the first time this year, beating my previous record by about 2 weeks! Air temp outside ranged from 25F to 42F (-3C-5C). Inside the oven the temp reached 180F (82C)
My box oven was joined by a folding panel cooker, design is called the Copenhagen Cooker, it's very effective and easy to make, but more vulnerable to wind. #Solar #SolarCooking #LowTech #SolarOven -
At the farm I visited the other day, I received a couple soft breadfruit (they had an abundance of breadfruit on their trees and had extra). I used one to make savory fritters, and yesterday I used another to make sunbread!
I mixed the soft breadfruit with a lot of flour, some salt, pepper, little bit of oil, little bit of nutritional yeast, and some oats (for texture and variety). After making a dough that was floury enough to not stick to my hands, I rolled the whole thing in oil and put it in the gosun sport solar cooker. There was no yeast, so it didn't rise, but it was still good.
I was very happy with the results! Dense, moist, and very tasty. It has a bit of the sweetness of the soft breadfruit. Will make again!

Something I stumbled across that is making me feel better about the world:
The Flipflopi Project, which has built the first ever sailing dhow made from recycled plastic, which was at the time probably the biggest item made from recycled plastic at 9m long. Now they are almost done with the second boat, which is 24m long.
This project:
- pays locals to collect plastic waste from beaches, out of sensitive and CO2-storing mangrove forests and from households
- uses this waste and recycles it to make new materials for the boats
- experiments with using solar cookers to heat up plastic for processing
- is saving trees from having to be cut down for the boats
- works with traditional dhow builders, keeping this craft alive
- teaches students about the different stages of the project, how to sort, recycle, use plastic as well as weaving, carpentry (with wood and plastic), metalwork, traditional and high-tech machines and boat building
- sailed along the coast of east Africa and around Lake Victoria, connecting communities around the region
