“Don’t get me wrong: I love #nuclear #energy! It’s just that I prefer fusion to #fission. And it just so happens that there’s an enormous #fusion #reactor safely banked a few million miles from us. It delivers more than we could ever use in just about 8 minutes. And it’s wireless!” - William McDonough (2006) #solar

With an all #electric house and car, and plenty of #solar, I've isolated our family from energy markets. Sadly the diesel trucks delivering all our stuff still cost us money. #ev #electricvehicles

Plugin solar comes to the UK albeit nearer to 700 quid rather than the projected 400. Much like the (largely ignored) mandatory sealed battery interlinked fire alarms here in Scotland i'll wait a year for the price gouging to settle down #UK #solar #PluginSolar

Saharan dust is not only a weather story.
For power markets, the real issue can be the combination of reduced PV output and forecasts that are slow to capture it — especially when cooling demand is also rising.
This week the temperature and dust peaks do not perfectly align, creating a multi-day balancing risk rather than one single critical day.
Glad to contribute my perspective to Alina Trabattoni’s latest piece for Montel News.

It's official plug-in solar day in the UK!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g3y6398nwo
Having a quick browse online I haven't worked out which retailers or brands are actually going on sale - only ecoflow seems to pop up.
I'm a little disappointed that the prices are so high, perhaps they'll settle down. My understanding that you are meant to only purchase a kit, I feel like I could construct a setup for individual parts fairly easily and for far less. For example:
Ecoflow 800W micro inverter £122 from Argos
2x Trina Vertex S+ 455W for £35.70 each (https://midsummerwholesale.co.uk/buy/damaged-panels/trina-black-white-455w-damaged)
Total £193Obviously excluded delivery, cables and mounting.
Anyway it's a positive step forward, l look forward to seeing the market open up.
Edit: turns out those panels aren't actually in stock but I think if you were able to wait you could grab a good deal.
Edit2: probably should have linked to gov press release https://www.gov.uk/government/news/households-can-save-as-plug-in-solar-panels-come-to-market
Edit 3: as noted by @sheddi the ecoflow model didn't pass the tests so we will have to see whether there is some sort of update. Increasingly feels like it's going to be slow to get established as a concept

And so plug-in, balcony solar panels arrive in the UK (following after a lag their surge across the European continent); while not exactly accelerating the Green Transition, they will normalise localised solar power generation & once allied with cheap & accessible batteries may well start to help build more support for a wider Green Transition (or am I being too optimistic?)

A busy month. Installed #solar, #inductivecooktop and a #heatpump. Tomorrow the gas company removes the meter.
#FossilFuelFree ! Been using EV and electric barbeque for years, so we are there.
The best way to stop oil and gas is to electrify. It starts at home. Lifecycle costs favour it, by far.
(and do try an electric BBQ. Like EVs, you’ll never go back)

@Viss @rlabrecque Indeed, which is why I was wondering whether it was mostly that or the other thing.
I am not envisioning crop field solar panels with water pipes along the upper level dripping down the back of the panel to cool it as it goes down to a spray head at the bottom of the panel. I wonder if that warmer water would affect the quality of the irrigation?
This is one of those things someone in the field will figure out, I'm sure. But it seems like a good (and if so, inevitable) idea.

Friend is thinking about a solar generator for house that's under 1,000 sq ft. He has medical equipment so needs whole house reliability. Any specific suggestions, warnings, or experience I can relay to him? Thanks in advance. #solarpower #solar #solarenergy

Additionally, I want to change our generator setup. Currently we have a 13kW propane generator behind the solar shed, with a cable that connects it to the Outback Solar 8kW inverter. When the generator is fired up, the inverter throws an internal transfer switch and powers camp straight from the generator in addition to charging the batteries.
As a result, if we try to power the hot water heater and charge the batteries from the generator at the same time, it can bog down the gennie enough that the Hz drops and the inverter rejects the power.
So I hope to get a chargeverter instead. That way the generator will only add charge to the batteries. It won't run all of camp's power - that will continue to come from the batteries.
This way we can swap to a smaller, quieter 5k Predator generator that would only provide a steady 3200W of charging straight to the batteries instead of powering camp too, and camp's power wouldn't be switch or be subject to iffy power from a generator.

I'm working on a proposal to our non-profit's board of directors to revamp our solar system with 64kWh of 51.2V LiFePo4 batteries.
They had already approved purchase of a $15,000 off-grid 15kW auto-start diesel generator. But that generator has been discontinued and wouldn't fit with proper clearance in the space we prepared for it anyways.
But really the problem is not power generation. Our solar array at 7kW is easily capable of producing 30kWh/day, which would cover our continual loads (10kWh) the bath house water heater (9kWh/40gal heating from scratch), and A/C for the main cabin (12kWh/day if run for 14hrs instead of just daytime).
The problem is our 60kWh bank of AGM batteries needs to be kept above 80% to last 10 yrs. That's only 12kWh of useable storage.
So I'm proposing we switch to a 64kWh bank of LiFePo4's. That would power our continuous loads for 6 days without sun, instead of just one day with the AGM bank. storms rarely last that long in SoCal. And we could power the additional stuff all night and only use 50% of our storage.
The idea would be to keep the AGM bank with a 48V charger keeping them topped off as a backup with a switch to power the inverter from them instead of the lifepo bank if needed.

California plug-in solar bill SB 868 earns approval of both legislative houses, nears governor’s desk
The California state Assembly has passed SB 868, known as the Plug and Play Solar Act. Pending Senate concurrence in amendments made to the bill by the Assembly, California is one step away from passing its highly-anticipated plug-in solar legislation.
