  1. is our second sodalite-structure (after ). Finch et al. (2016) investigated the sources of color from point defects, bonds, and coordination in the cage structure.

Tugupite is different, due to the beryllium substitution & also that the sodium atoms (large grey balls in the images) are five-fold coordinated, not four-fold.

Tugupite is (my word of the day): it changes color in daylight, and this might be useful in window blinds.

  3. Boohoo, #Sodalite lost a close one to #Stibnite. I hope sodalite gets a chance next year to convince folks it's super cool. Onward! #MinCup23

  4. Match 4 in #MinCup23
    Fact sheet:

    #Stibnite
    1) there's a town called Stibnite in Idaho
    2) has been used since Egyptian times as eyeliner, in cosmetics, and as medicine
    3) Used in glitter compositions in fireworks

    #Sodalite
    1) It fluoresces bright red-orange under ultraviolet light
    2) The uniformly blue parts are used in jewellery.
    3) Sodalite-bearing rocks are used as decorative floor and wall coverings

  5. This match is still close but with little over an hour to go it looks as if #Stibnite will make it to Round 2 of #MinCup23. Can #Sodalite regain the lead? Make your case, recruit new players and vote!

  6. Less than 2 hours left and #stibnite has pulled slightly ahead of #sodalite. If you haven’t yet, pick your favorite and vote! #MinCup23

  7. @FaithfullJohn is just one of several blue minerals in -get used to it! Better than stibnite swords of death.

  8. Now the cool thing about #NephilineSyenite is that yes, there will be a sizeable proportion of silica containing alkali feldspar. #Sodalite, #Nephiline and others, if present, crystallize AFTER the available Si is used up. So they may be vein-filling or adjacent in the matrix. But if they are present, that's definitive for a silica poor source magma. Anyway, VOTE SODALITE! #TeamSodalite #MinCup23

  10. So, what does it take to be a silica deficient magma like those that produce #Sodalite? Well, the entire earth is 32%Fe, 30%O, 15%Si & it drops off quick. But the crust is 47%O, 28%Si, 8%Al, 5%Fe. You need to remove that 28% for #NephileneSyenite rock so the source material itself must be silica deprived. Magmas created from quartz-poor sources include deep marine subduction zones where ocean floor sediments are clayey, calcareous, high in AL but also low in silica, which is rare! #MinCup23
