  1. Buried the actual lede of the story... so here it is:

""Seeing these salmon runs exceeding estimated pre-season numbers by four and five times is truly a reflection of the hard work we have done to remove fish farms on the approach to the Fraser River," Werk pointed out. "

As a former deckhand on a family commercial salmon troller in 1990s, before the explosion of fish farms on the coast, I think there are more factors than just the closing of open net fish farms that has supported the return of this year's huge run of sockeye. It could be ocean temperatures in the North Pacific rebounding (down), it could be conditions on the Fraser River and the spawning streams... many things.

But do i think fish farms were decimating the health of fish migrating to and from the Fraser River and contributing to low return runs?

    You're damn right I do.

  3. #BritishColumbia #FirstNations are initiating an #emergency #salmon #TaskForce to investigate the impact on the #sockeye salmon due to last week’s #Chilcotin River #landslide.

“Chilcotin Rivers are kind of our identity,” Nits’ilʔin (Chief) Francis Laceese, Tl’esqox said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Same with the salmon, you know, that’s basically who we are. That’s our biggest food source.”

#Tŝilhqotin National Government (TNG) is calling on all levels of government, downstream First Nations, the #PacificSalmonCommission, and other nations and states, especially #Alaskan #fisheries, to take all precautionary measures possible to conserve Tŝilhqot’in territory-bound salmon, and to immediately cease from fisheries that may impact these stocks, until the impacts from the landslide and breach are fully understood.

A massive landslide came down last Wednesday, damming the Chilcotin River, which leads into the #FraserRiver

  10. Now #abandoned - 1st salted fish #cannery built in #AlertBay & used as #NamgisNation #fishingNets sort station after cannery closed.
#Built in 1862 by Mack & Neill. It targeted #NimpkishRiver fish, specifically #sockeye #salmon . Seasonal processing employed many Indigenous people. At about the same time, a Christian mission/school which had been established at Fort Rupert moved to Alert Bay to minister to the Indigenous population which was moving to the island to work in the cannery.
