  7. I am happy to share that our project "RELIGION, MEANING AND MASCULINITIES", led by professor Kati Tervo-Niemelä, just received a four-year reseach grant from the Research Council of Finland. The project explores what religion means to men and how the role of religion is changing among men in finland. My part of the project looks at the intersections of religion and nonreligion.

  11. Nearly forgot - @emjric and I will be on the St Paul's Cathedral YouTube channel in about an hour and a half, talking about our book #AtTheGates and why we wanted to share the stories and #theology of #disabled Christians. Still time to sign up for the premiere at 7pm (BST), or it will be available for catch-up aftewards - eventbrite.co.uk/e/at-the-gate (I'm hoping to be in chat but might be a bit quiet as spoons are low today) #DisabilityTheology #Religidons #SociologyOfReligion

@wildmandrake @philosophy @psychology I'll suggest that #Christianity "won" by becoming the world's largest bait-and-switch, pasting symbols of Christ the Lord on institutions of this world amid false claims and human self-exaltation.

Wow. What this suggests to me is that they got to a point where it didn't matter what policy they were going to impose (segregation, abortion, don't say gay, whatever) as long as they could be the ones to dictate to the country. If so, they're still at that point.

Of course, the political irony of #USpolitics now dictates that we have a devout Roman Catholic #POTUS who is pro-choice.

But still! Conservative Catholics are crucial to a right-of-center political movement, so Catholics cannot be categorically disrespected.

Think about Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority in the 1970s. Of course, Falwell was an Evangelical Protestant who didn't believe that there was salvation for anyone who hadn't been (in the New Testament sense) born again. However, he was happy to have conservative Jewish people, Latter Day Saints, and...yes...Roman Catholics join his political movement.

OK, here's my working hypothesis: Roe v Wade was a watershed event.

The mostly Protestant conservative leadership in the US had reasons of its own for wanting to make abortion illegal again, and many Roman Catholics were ready-made allies in this. The latter began to be seen as something more than highly suspect recent immigrants who were probably controlled by the Pope. They were a reliable voting block.

  30. Today's #SociologyOfReligion reflection:

In the USA, we have a #president who is a serious #RomanCatholic. This is not a very big deal, in comparison to all the fuss in the 1960 election, when many #Protestants had their knickers in a twist. They feared that John Kennedy would take orders from the #pope.

What are your thoughts about this? I have a hypothesis...

  31. NY resolution 2023 #1 achieved: I have an account here. Yay! Yay?

No idea what to do with it yet. I remember very little about my early Twitter days (I signed up and promptly forgot about it for 10 years), but hope to find #sociology and #sociologyofreligion community here.
