This line in Barbara Baig's writing book triggered a memory: "most adults are very self-conscious about learning anything new."
Years ago I took an ink painting class at my local arts center. A middle-aged woman cried because she wasn't immediately good at it. To me this is a convincing case for #ungrading.

I have an undergraduate student who did his own quantitative study of university student extension-asking. It's thoroughly grounded in the state-of-the-art theory (Lareau, @jessicacalarco), and he did it just going off of survey design textbooks I gave him, a stats course in multiple regression, and using stuff he learned in my stratification class.
I have had a *lot* of extremely smart students but I am not used to this.

Stats / demography question: Say you have two populations with different standard deviations. Let's say you wanted to determine how much compositional differences affect the standard deviation, in contrast to the average differences of each group. The key is that it's *not* about the mean, but the dispersion, so a Kitagawa decomposition doesn't really make sense. What would I use?

I plan to "write in" one candidate for every single office for the general #ASA ballot "NO to Ballot Amendment 3!"
This is made easier by the fact that there are, yet again, only something like 3 people running who say what their policy agenda is.

Please vote NO on Ballot Amendment #3, which reads:
"Do you approve amending the ASA Bylaws to stipulate that the member resolution process is for public policy positions of the Association, as recommended by the ASA Council?" -
Browsing through ASA election statements. I found this gem (pasted below). What the heck is this referring to? You can't just tease this drama and not tell us what happened!

The more I think about this ballot resolution amendment (https://sciences.social/@jonathanhorowi1/110198386649295534), the more I question why I am a member of #ASA.
It would be nice to serve in section leadership someday, because I am the sort of person who wants to be involved with governance (as evidenced by me being offended with this member resolution).
But right now I'm not, and it's not clear I ever will be. And cutting off ballot resolutions is a direct attack on participation. So now what?

and reflecting once again on how, when I gave birth a year ago, I was in the hospital for one entire week and in that time, every single nurse I interacted with was white and every single tech (nurse's assistant, other jobs I don't know the title of) except one was a person of color.

Members of #ASASociology Council, I'd love to know more about what the discussion on this has been like. I'm coming at this with a strong opinion that it's a mistake, but I promise that a conversation about it won't be antagonistic and I'm open to changing my mind!

Hat tip to @wrigleyfield for pointing out some seriously awful changes in this ballot #ASA ballot initiative. Someone (council? ASA paid staffers?) wants to limit the ability for membership to introduce member resolutions. And the ballot question doesn't mention this at all!

@austinvanloon Posted this upcoming chapter in a Machine Learning Handbook he wrote and I think it looks really interesting. I haven't read it yet, so I haven't decided whether I agree or not but I like this idea of "predictability hypotheses" at least on the surface.

Manuscript word limits (or page limits) for #sociology and related journals. I spent way too long on this. I didn't finish and there were a couple I couldn't find, but hopefully this will be useful to someone else anyway.

#sociodon @sociology If it helps, the journal article I am writing is going to be at least 9K, including references but not including tables and figures. It's a quantitative article.
My original plan was to send it to #SociologyOfEducation (#SocOfEd). But although they have a 10K word count, the tables and figures count against the word count, so I'm down to about 8700 and I don't think that's possible unless I move a table that I *know* reviewers will want to see to an appendix.

#DissertationProgress: Considering running away to join a #psychology lab that has multiple projects relevant to my research areas. No one in my program does what I do - imagine a whole lab!
I know #sociology doesn't do many labs but sometimes the grass looks real green over there, as I sit at home alone, in transcription hell.
