@damngoodtech I understand where you're coming from and I agree to an extent. The horror genre, like any other, certainly has its share of superficial or gimmicky offerings. However, I believe there's a depth to horror that might be overlooked. Good horror, in my opinion, does more than just scare; sometimes it's funny (Shaun of the Dead), sad (The Babadook & Hereditary were very sad for me), or just gory (Terrifier). Sometimes... it can really make you think.
Psychological horror, for instance, can be a profound exploration of the human mind and our fears. It can challenge our perceptions and make us reflect on our insecurities, much like how you desire fiction to challenge and change your outlook.
Horror can be a powerful vehicle for social commentary. For example, George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” tackled issues of race during a tumultuous time in American history, and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” explores racial tensions in a modern setting.
Horror can transport audiences to places where we confront the unfamiliar and the uncomfortable, prompting reflection and discussion on a deeper level. So, while there's certainly a spectrum of depth within the horror genre, I believe there's a significant portion that transcends mere scares and contributes to a broader dialogue.
