The #childwelfare system in #manitoba is horribly broken. I worked as a #socialworker in that system almost 20 years ago, and it sounds like nothing has improved. Sad.

I'm a volunteer #pianist at the local #hospital for about a month now.

That might seem an easy job -- just play the grand #piano for an hour or so and leave. And it is, for the most part. What I didn't know when I said "Yes" when I was asked to become a #volunteer, is that you are also become a kind of #socialworker.

There are people with worries in the hall, people who just got bad news. They need someone to talk to and I happen to be there.

I'm learning.

In NY State, after a person is #convicted of a #felony or serious misdemeanor, a #probation officer must prepare a pre-sentence report, which the judge uses to help determine the defendant’s #punishment.

In some instances, the defendant can also be interviewed by a #SocialWorker or #psychologist working for the Probation Dept. Such reports also include a defendant’s #criminal history…& the probation officer often interviews the arresting officer…& the defendant’s family members & friends.

My favorite bit → At the presentence interview, a #psychologist or #SocialWorker working for the #probation dept may also talk to #Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression & explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” acc/to the New York State Unified Court System.

People help is also more than welcome - I need a place to stay, an #advocate, #SocialWorker etc too. There are barely any resources allocated to my catchment area so I’m pretty much on my own. Have been trying almost 2 years to get an advocate!

Albanese’s Escaping Violence package shows no signs of including the #disabled and people with #ChronicIllness so we’re still on our own. Yes the government forgot to ‘forgot’ to include us. Current #DV and #FanilyViolence services won’t help us. I’ve tried them all.

It's wierd being a #surgery patient for such a long stretch of time and experiencing the things about which I see the least as a #medical #SocialWorker. I've never interacted much in terms of routine back and forth with a patient portal as an actual *patient* — my only experiences have been around refills and the occasional "does this look wierd?" question to my PCP. But wow does a good portal UI/UX make for a drastically more seamless experience as a patient and way better early detection/prevention. It makes me think, since I know so many surgeons who hate portal messages, that in the age where portals are a primary form of communication insurance companies desperately need to start reimbursing for this. There isn't a possible future where asynchronous communication doesn't become even more central to care.

I suppose it's time to do a proper #introduction (again). I used to run AntiTERF.club for a while, but thanks to a dedicated server failure that I don't have the energy to fix (because the provider was already having problems), I'm now here on AntiTERF.com.

I'm a #pansexual #trans woman, #COVID #vaccine worker, and future #socialworker and gender therapist. I'm also #Jewish, #autistic / #neurodiverse, and have a number of #chronicillness issues, such as #crohns and respiratory issues.
