  1. Automation and repression — why the two go hand in hand
    Revolts, triggered by inequality

    * "It's taxes or pitchforks!"
"This is the real underlying threat posed by automation: tremendous social upheaval, public unrest, and political collapse stemming from widespread unemployment and grotesque inequality."

"More automation will require more redistribution to cushion the disruptive effects of automation, so as a country automates more, the tax burden will keep increasing on "capitalists"

Acemoglu, Shadmehr and Gitmez "have modelled how workers would try to coordinate in an uprising, and how a capitalist state would try to prevent an uprising occurring, in an environment in which automation and inequality are increasing."

"They say the novel finding of their paper is that automation and repression complement and reinforce each other...The economy will ultimately converge to repression and the 'pitchforks' will be met with 'guns' from the capitalist state". >>

    * "We characterize the trade-off between the regulation of automation, redistribution and repression. Our main result is a complementarity between automation and repression. We show that, starting in a democracy, capital accumulation and thus greater automation encourages the capitalists to support a coup against democracy and set up a repressive system." >>

  9. A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

Our worst revolutionaries today are those reactionaries who do not see and will not admit that there is any need for change.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Autobiography, ch. 13 “Social and Industrial Justice” (1913)

  12. A quotation from Frederick Douglass

The American people have this lesson to learn: That where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) American abolitionist, orator, writer
Speech (1886-04-16), “Strong to Suffer, and Yet Strong to Strive,” Israel Bethel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C.

  15. In every city you see them. The young men with nowhere to go and nothing to do. They are not unique to London, or Paris or Rio; each country, unhappy in its own way, has its own means of production. They are the world's problem demographic, caught between childhood and adulthood, care and responsibility, education and application. Wherever there is poverty and inequality, young men are waiting, ready to explode. Wherever there are cracks, they will be falling through them.

[2/2] Since the 1980s the #CCP has used #nationalism as a pillar of support for their rule.

Anchoring its power over people in the #Chinese #tradition has worked out well for them.

#Nationalism is like an evil glue to a group of people to make them hate "others" instead of their rulers.

Still, their is a lot of reason for #socialunrest in China and the #party knows that quite well.

It is interesting studying the party's approaches of dealing with it including #Counterinsurgency

  45. There is a new major #food #scandal in #China

    After the #地沟油 #gutteroil & the 2008 melamine-contaminated #baby #formula scandal, a new #foodsafety #problem was discovered.

As the news spread via #Beijing #News & #Weibo, the government started a major censorship campaign.

#Foodsecurity is a major reason for #socialunrest in China
