  1. Album: Chronotropic
    Artist: Anoraak
    Released: October 21, 2023

Electronic dance-infused music with a healthy dose of synthwave and hints of disco.

I discovered and liked one of the tracks on Apple Music through my interest in synthwave but the whole album is solid.

Check it out on Bandcamp: anoraak.bandcamp.com/album/chr

  2. Last night was a blast! In addition to doing a couple DJ streams on Twitch every Tuesday and Thursday evening, I've started doing Discord "Deep Dive" streams every Wednesday evening. On Discord I can play stuff no longer allowed under Twitch's new DJ Program like "restricted" music and full albums.

I play music across a broad range of genres from my growing collection of physical media - vinyl, CD, cassette. If you'd like to see my streams on either platform, check out my website newfangled.live

  3. Album: Loveplaydance: 8 Scenes From the Floor
    Artist: Toshio Matsuura Group
    Released: 2018

One of my current musical obsessions. A brilliant jazz/fusion/funk album. Every single track is fantastic - it’s an album I want to listen to straight through over and over again. I managed to snag this on CD - vinyl copies are in high demand. But absolutely worth checking out and adding to your collection if you are at all interested in the genre.

  4. Album: The Breaker
    Artist: Little Big Town
    Released: 2017

If you like country and folk rock with minimal twang - or even if you don’t like country and folk - these guys are worth checking out. This is a solid album.

  6. Album: Elastic
    Artist: Joshua Redman
    Released: 2002

This album is one of many examples of why I collect CDs in addition to vinyl - this has no vinyl release (yet). A supremely talented jazz saxophonist, Redman and crew lay down some pristine jazzy funk in this one.

  7. Album: Page One
    Artist: Joe Henderson
    Released: 2021 (1963)

A long-time favorite. I played covers of several songs from this album in jazz combos in college (tenor sax). I used to have this on CD and am very happy to have it back in the collection on vinyl.

  8. Album: On Stage
    Artist: David Barrus
    Released: 1997

You’ve likely never heard of him, but David Barrus has performed on Broadway and with a touring company and has founded successful voice studios. Suffice it to say, he’s a wonderful vocalist. Mostly songs from musicals with a couple inspirational songs in the mix, this is a great album to listen to when you need a morale boost.

  9. Album: Clarinet Concerto In A Major, K622 / Clarinet Quintet In A Major, K581
Artist: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Thea King, English Chamber Orchestra, Jeffrey Tate, Gabrieli String Quartet
    Released: 1986

Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto In A Major has a special place in my heart. I performed it in college recitals (with piano accompaniment) when I was studying music. It remains a beloved piece and one of my favorite Mozart compositions, and Thea King plays it with virtuosic zeal.

  10. Album: Ticket To Ride
    Artist: Carpenters
    Released: 2012 (CD), 1969 (Original)

I love the Carpenters. Richard’s arrangements, Karen’s voice, all of it. This is their first album, also sold under the title “Offering”. They are still finding their signature sound, and Karen’s voice is a little more raw and unpolished - but it’s gorgeous and unmistakably Karen. A great album from start to finish, my favorite song is actually one that never got radio play. “Someday” is absolutely beautiful, haunting, and one of my all-time favorite Carpenters songs.

  11. Album: Some Great Reward
    Artist: Depeche Mode
    Released: 2020 reissue, 1984 original

Classic Depeche Mode. There isn’t a song on this record I don’t like. My favorite is probably “Somebody”.

  12. Album: These Are The Vistas
    Artist: The Bad Plus
    Released: 2003

Their sick cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is what got me into to them, but this whole album is fantastic contemporary jazz.

  13. Album: Napoleon Dynamite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
    Artist: Various
    Released: 2020 (2004)

A great soundtrack from a flippin’ sweet movie. It doesn’t have all the songs that were in the movie and one of them is a cover. Gosh! Still a fantastic album. Probably one of the best ever made. It even includes snippets of dialog straight out of the movie.

  14. Album: The Planets
Artist: Gustav Holst - Sir Adrian Boult, The New Philharmonia Orchestra
    Released: 1967

One of my favorite orchestral works! Mars and Jupiter are the movements that usually get all the love, but the whole thing is a masterpiece. Even of you don’t do Classical, you’ll like this one.

  15. Album: Meanwhile Back In Paris...
    Artist: Streetheart
    Released: 1978

I had never heard of this band when I came across this album in the stacks, but it was only $6 so I figured I’d check it out. Turns out this is a solid classic rock album with some hints of prog. Worth keeping in my collection.

  16. Album: N’ssi N’ssi
    Artist: Khaled
    Released: 1993

I discovered this amazing artist and album through a movie. A song from this album is featured during the taxi chase scene from “The Fifth Element”, but was not included in the soundtrack album. I scoured the deepest recesses of the early 2000’s internet to find out what that song was: “Alech Taadi”. I ordered the CD and I immediately discovered I loved the entire album from start to finish. Khaled masterfully melds middle eastern, western, and other influences to create a unique and compelling sound. This album is fantastic and worth checking out.
