  1. #SocialPrescribing "connects people with non-clinical support & services within their communities. While more commonly adopted in countries with govt health services, it is now gaining ground in the US. …  covers a range of activities, including arts, culture, social groups, nature-based activities, & volunteer opportunities.

… It’s based on the idea that an individual’s health is directly related to their connection to the community in which they live, work, & grow."

  6. A report published this week found that green social prescribing schemes in #England have led to significant improvements in #wellbeing among the 8400 participants.

They were prescribed thing like #nature walks, #community #gardening and #TreePlanting, with researchers finding that not only were #happiness, #anxiety, and life satisfaction levels increased but such #SocialPrescribing is significantly cheaper than other #MentalHealth interventions.

It backs up step ‘N’ in my A-Z of steps to a better world: ethicalrevolution.co.uk/natura 🚶‍♂️🌳

  9. For many an increase of well-supported #SocialPrescribing is a key to addressing #mentalhealth problems among our young.... but research indicates that for the vulnerable & hard to reach, this is best carried out by people & #keyworkers the child already knows.

So rather than a whizz-bang new strategy & feasibility studies of new institutional responses, if we are going to makes social prescribing work better, we need to ramp up funding to expand the existing provision!

  14. I became interested in #compassionateCommunities after seeing a patient with brain secondaries supported by friends to stay at home. I wanted to know how to make that level of support available for all our patients.
Connections are key to our health. Developing community builds social capital by encouraging connections. #SocialPrescribing can help, but also medicalises community connections and only works if there's activity to signpost people to.

  15. Look after your nature deficit! Protecting & expanding green spaces, & ensuring they are accessible, can be considered an investment in good health.

  23. In sum, both individual mindset & motivation to participate in a social group AND the characteristics of the activity play a role in improving #wellbeing. We recommend both should be considered, e.g. for #socialprescribing or similar; consider person-activity fit.

  24. I'll do an #introduction - I'm Cormac, I live in #Manchester, though about to move to the hills just outside (#NewMills). I do research on #climatechange #education - specifically #CarbonLiteracy - based in Manchester Metropolitan (MMU). Have previously worked on community-based health (#SocialPrescribing) #CommunityRadio, community learning/education, community development off-and-online (#Wikipedia) - with offshoots into #fuelpoverty, #activetravel, #occupationaltherapy... so a mixed bag. :-)
