So if you're new to #Fediverse, you may be have an opinion on my comparison to Linux. Or, you may just be looking for a better place to post cat pictures. Either way, keep in mind that this place is not the same as the other social media sites. Think of those like big space stations, they may be fancy and have a lot of amenities, but they're isolated habitats. The Fediverse is more like a planet, with mountains, forests, deserts, continents, islands, and people swimming across the oceans or just treading water. You can explore all that, but you start with your surroundings.
I do recommend looking at a smaller instance. I started at a big one, and it can give you a more Twitter-esque impression, but a smaller one that you align more closely with means you're closer to the people actually running it, be they mods or the admins controlling the actual server. There's only so much they can do about the rest of the Fediverse - usually cutting off from it. But you don't have to be at the whims of a massive entity.
Look for people to follow. Follow hashtags that look interesting, and use them when you post. Fill out your bio and make an intro, so people can get to know you as an actual individual. We don't have an algorithm here to spoonfeed you things, so if you're just here to promote your thing maybe it's not the best place. But if you engage people (tastefully and courteously) about that thing and represent it well, you never know.
Realize that this place is just another set of tools, and that it doesn't magically solve every problem you've ever had with social media. It's often said that you can't solve societal problems with technology, and if you dig around on the Fediverse enough you'll find a lot of toxic sludge, some pretty obvious and some less obvious. Realize that there are ways people interact with this place, and while you shouldn't be expected to pick up on every unwritten rule, it's good to be aware of what's going on.
Realize we're doing what we can with what we have. It doesn't mean we're (you, I, and everyone) are above criticism, but we use the tools that are available. Yes, sometimes that means that instances no longer talk to each other (defederation), meaning you basically need to maintain alts. You can and should comment or complain about how things work (that happens a lot), but realize that there's a chance it might actually amount to something. Or that it might not.
And of course, if this place isn't what you're looking for, that's okay too. But if you came here looking for something new, give it a whirl and see.

I tried moving instances today and didn’t realize my posts wouldn’t come with me, which is a bummer. Actually I don’t even know if that’s true or if I just did it wrong (I live in the “I don’t know what I don’t know” domain lately.)
In other news, Sargon of Akkad was reinstated on tw*tter and I was automatically following him wtf. That place just sucks so much now. I’m getting more and more recommendations about a**holes to follow. The change is now actually palpable. -
