If I compare #ActivityPub #fediverse of today with that of a couple of years ago (as my acount perceives it), these are some of my observations:
- Being on a well-moderated instance I see a quieter, calmer fediverse.
- Less drama, performative activism, and purity spiral anti-patterns reach my timeline.
- People are genuine in their posts, yet doom & gloom dominate the feed.
- There are less posts than there used to be.
- In terms of interactions / engagement fediverse feels like a ghost town.
- But there are plenty nice discussions to participate in.
- People boost less, yet that is how we can grow and foster healthy culture at the same time.
- Posts with high engagement depend on weird virality dynamics, or relate to recognized influencers.
- In that sense this microblog space isn't much different than other platforms.
My #SocialExperience on this account is shaped by my history of years-long fedi / AP / FOSS advocacy, that made me choose whom to follow and who followed me.

Social experience design or #SX has the notion of Personal social networking, where picturing familiar offline settings can help design our online world..

At personal level ones #SocialExperience starts when opening your eyes in the morning and social signals start to be processed by our senses.
If I am a market salesperson in my town, when I rise in the morning then I first have breakfast with my family, and we DM privately at the breakfast table.
Then I walk outside and shitpost about the weather with my neighbors who are also going out the door to their work.
And in the street I nod to familiar faces, giving Likes and Emoji and the occasional reply to their toot to me.
Then, at the market square in my own stall, I step onto my soapbox and loudly boost my message to the crowds: "Potatoes for sale. Very cheap, good quality".
At the end of the day I DM meet with the market planner professionally to reserve my spot for next week, RSVP my Event.

The #EU @ngi #grant programs and the hard work of @nlnet to distribute @EUCommission Horizon Europe #funding has done wonders to take #fediverse where it stands today. In my article I list all the many #FOSS projects that received stimulus and support during the years.
However something fundamental has been lacking in the mandate on who is eligible. Coding is Social. The support does not cover the rich tapestry of #expertise that end-to-end #solutions need during their lifecycle. Does not include fostering cohesive #technology ecosystems, healthy #OpenStandards evolution.
Effectively this creates a 'handover point' of software code from poor FOSS to others who earn a living with it.

Especially grateful I am, for their consistent support during many yeas, towards the @EUCommission who with @ngi and @nlnet made a BIG difference to where the fediverse stands today.
It goes to show that only with a little "breadcrumb funding" - as I call it in my #SocialExperience piece on my years of navigating chaotic #commons, doing #CommonsJanitoring and #CommonsCustodian duties - can already achieve so so much 🪙🪙
I hope for further improvement to the #funding facilities that are available to #FOSS and #SocialWeb cocreators, and look expectedly to upcoming changes in the #HorizonEU grant programs and their alignment to our fediverse developer ecosystem.

The fun of #SX is that you don't have to learn it, nor do you have to get it taught to you.
Like chess you should #experience it to gain #experience, and you do that by meeting other #people and #practice it. By #SocialExperience with your friends and peers in the chess world #SocialGraph. Weaving #SocialFabric where you can be playful, creative and do experiments, engage in #challenges. This keeps one intrinsically #motivated to stay into the #game. Learn more. Enter a virtuous ⭕ circle of rewarding #exercises.
And perhaps one day. Suddenly and unexpected, #opportunity finds you to play against #MagnusCarlsen. And WIN!
The important thing is: You need not have any *expectation* for that. And most people shouldn't, as it is boils down to 'hanging yourself up to a Vision' if you simply don't possess the 'chess genius gene'. Most people don't.
However you can still #Dream about beating Magnus one day to have fun at every level of your progression path to mastery.

I think we also have to be careful and gauge the extent to which we get informed on problems by the way we shaped our own bubble / echo chamber over time.
Today for instance I sent a poll and got astoundingly and delightful positive responses on how people experience #fediverse..
I intend to follow up with another poll. But the poll results already show a new paradigm of social networking that #fediverse which Social experience design calls #PersonalSocialNetworking. On the fedi you are in control over your own #SocialExperience by carefully curating your social graph.

What are the useful functions of social media? Why are we trying to replace DataFarming with decentralised networks like the fediverse, ATmosphere and Nostr-space, rather than withdrawing from the medium altogether and doing something totally different? What do we want to get out of the time and resources we put into using decentralised social services, or running infrastructure to support them?

And he explained why he did all that hard work with Pixelfed for the community and the commons… why he spent all the blood, sweat and tears. Namely to ensure that one day perhaps his at the time young niece would have a humane alternative to Instagram."
