Heads up for #SocialBC users.
We’ve been having some issues since yesterday afternoon where timelines are updating a visible but posting and interactions are not working or intermittent. We're on the case and working on a fix.
Thanks for your patience.

As promised, I have implemented the suspension/block on mastodon.cloud. Folks on #SocialBC will not be able to interact with accounts on that server.
This was done due to ongoing issues with spam and un-moderated user additions from that un-regulated and defunct server.
The negative impact should be minimal as very few people followed accounts there or vice versa.

Since I went nuclear on the Black Press owned outlets I’m definitely noticing a lack of local news for the smaller communities. Is anyone else feeling the absence of news from their particular town/region?

Hey #SocialBC folks!
I've posted an announcement on the webpage. You can find it under the speaker icon. The short version is:As of May 1, 2026 SocialBC.ca will be de-federating from the Mastodon.cloud instance.
The instance has become defunct and still has open registation so is becoming a source of spam and other problematic content.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to the team.

Found a little glitch with the #RosslandBC news feed this morning. I’ve narrowed the search scope a little bit to hopefully tighten it up. #SocialBC
-
News bot update: with *most* of the Black Press outlets filtered out, the feed (at least from my perspective) seems much more relevant and manageable.
I discovered that the site (rss.app) I use to create the feeds has an upper limit on the number of filter terms I can use, and I’ve reached it, so adding any more keywords means removing others.
One day I’d like to move to a programatic solution, but I’m not much of a coder, so a bunch more learning would be required…
-
Question for folks here on #SocialBC (or anyone following the BC local news bots):
Do you find the duplication of posts across multiple bots annoying? I’m trying to decide whether to just outright block Black Press owned news outlets due to the way they blast out news stories across their many properties. Blocking them outright will result in some legitimate local news stories going unseen, but is that a price worth paying to stop results like the below?:
(Poll in next post)
-
@ChrisIstace that is one reason why i wanted to start #SocialBC... to return to the community-based social spaces of old where the spaces were grass-roots communities.
Moderation will never be perfect, but it can be done a lot better, and algorithms can be a lot healthier.

:woollyBC: Only two days left for #SocialBC users to vote in our character-count and polling-option survey!

No free Pickles!
#bcferries #bcpoliP.S. and now I REALLY wish I could coax the BCFerrys X account onto #SocialBC 😂

Very interesting post about the upcoming Collections feature in v4.6 of Mastodon which should be out in a few weeks.
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/04/designing-collections/
This sounds like something that could be useful for us as a small instance to help our new users find accounts to follow on #SocialBC and all over the #Fediverse

1/n Hey #SocialBC folks! We've refined our Bot policy a little bit. You can find it on the About page under: "Bots and Pseudonymous Accounts"
But I'll include it here as a thread:
"People and organizations are welcome to use socialbc.ca to create B.C.-related automated accounts or "bots" for news, weather, emergency services, and public information as well as entertainment and general fun and silliness.

Big welcome to @fname!!
He’s bringing his regional BC news bots to SocialBC for links straight from the news wires!
Super excited to be able to provide this for SocialBC and all Fedizens. It is a big part of our mission to have local, verified, and trusted information sources for people in B.C. on Fedi.
Below are the bots to follow. They will be on Quiet Public mode so they don’t overwhelm the live timelines.

Shout out and reminder to all #SocialBC members!
Our Polling Options and Character Limits Poll is ongoing! If you haven't voted yet, DM me for your link (@socialbc.ca accounts only).
If you have an opinion about small or large character counts on SocialBC and want to share it, please do! I'll boost all takes.
The poll ends on April 15.
And don't forget to check out our March 2026 newsletter at:
https://socialbc.org/newsletters.html -
More good news today! According to Fedidb.com, #SocialBC has re-reached and surpassed its initial monthly active user count from a year ago.
We're now at a tiny but mighty 67! Total number of accounts is 163, up from 102 a year ago.
We're up 20 users from January, so it's been a good start to the year.
(note that fedidb erroneously lists our servers as still being in Portugal, even though we have moved to Vancouver. Not sure when it will update)
-
We have had 10 people answer the character count and polling options poll so far from our March Newsletter! (that's about 15% of our 60 active users.)
All SocialBC users are encouraged to participate. Message me for your personal link to the poll. It will end April 15.
If you missed the Newsletter, it is here: https://socialbc.org/newsletters.html

This year’s Herring Spawn at Salmon Beach in Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ territory is featured in a NASA article!
https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/satellite-spots-a-spawn/
The picture is of Barkley Sound, on Vancouver Island. It is part of the territories of many Nuuchanulth and Maanulth nations at the mouth of Alberni Inlet.
Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ was anglicized to “Ucluelet”: the name of the nearby town, and companion to Tofino at each end of the Pacific Rim National Park.
I need to add the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ logo to #socialbc!

@Phae One of our members and new directors at #socialbc is @artbysarahsammis. She shares a ton of wonderful art. One of the reasons I wanted to create a regional instance was because I thought regional instances would be the “right size” for artists to both have enough organic connection to find people interested in purchase, and to act as community gathering places, to make that “local artists” feel.
Which is a long winded way of saying, we’d love to have you at socialbc if you’re interested.

It's the last day to sign up as an NDP member and be able to participate in the Leadership contest.
I want to take this moment to make a pitch for Tanille Johnston.
@votetanilleIt's not just because she's on #SocialBC 😊, and understands #DigitalSovereignty. 💪
It's not just because she's a Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ woman, boots-on-the-ground social worker, #health worker, and City Councillor.
It's not just because she wants #UBI for all Canadians.
It's because she's the future of the #NDP, and of #Canada.
She is a bright light in a dark time. She gets it, all of it. She's smart and tenacious and she works really really hard.
There are a number of great candidates for Leader of the NDP, but I think Tanille is one of the best. She's the 'dark horse' to use one of those outdated terms that pundits love.
Join up and participate in what will be one of the most important leadership races in NDP history... at probably the most consequential moment for Canada since WWII.
Click the link, check out her bio, then hit Donate to sign up for a membership tonight.
