OHH!! This is exciting! #SocialBC has been added to the official https://joinmastodon.org/servers list!!
Of course, the easiest way to sign up is to just head straight to socialbc.ca... but hopefully this will make it a little easier for people brand new to mastodon to discover us!
We are most easily found when people select ‘regional' and ‘public organization’.
Hooray!!

@ChrisIstace I'm a dork, but this is something fun/unique about mastodon that I really like.
Custom emojis on a server. In honour of Justin McElroy's famous ‘brackets’, I made custom emojis for #socialBC from every flag from every local government and first nation that I could find.
like: :ladysmith: #ladysmith
or :northcowichan: #northcowich or :cowichanvalleyRD: #cvrd
Just start with a colon : then the name and end with a colon :
I usually pair it with the hashtag.
Nerding complete. :)

@VE7WYC @[email protected] thanks so much Bill!
Just to be super clear/reiterate. I'm just chronically my own fun with my own personal instance at mstdn.chrisalemany.
#SocialBC is completely independent and not part of any of what I'm working on here in this thread.
I like doing this stuff though, and I like chronically as I go, and I really appreciate the encouragement and help from people here.
Mastodon is a great place :)

the good news is, I believe I've confirmed that redis and postgresql *are* the major culprits behind the disk performance issues on my #selfhost #footiMac @[email protected] instance
(to be clear, this is not connected to or impacting #socialBC)
The bad news is that it will take all night probably for it to finish what it's doing anyway, which is running apt for a long needed update.
So it's going to be morning before that account returns, but at least now I have a path forward!

#SocialBC NewsBot question:
FlowHockey posts; do you use it or should I lose it?

As promised, I have implemented the suspension/block on mastodon.cloud. Folks on #SocialBC will not be able to interact with accounts on that server.
This was done due to ongoing issues with spam and un-moderated user additions from that un-regulated and defunct server.
The negative impact should be minimal as very few people followed accounts there or vice versa.

Since I went nuclear on the Black Press owned outlets I’m definitely noticing a lack of local news for the smaller communities. Is anyone else feeling the absence of news from their particular town/region?

Found a little glitch with the #RosslandBC news feed this morning. I’ve narrowed the search scope a little bit to hopefully tighten it up. #SocialBC

News bot update: with *most* of the Black Press outlets filtered out, the feed (at least from my perspective) seems much more relevant and manageable.
I discovered that the site (rss.app) I use to create the feeds has an upper limit on the number of filter terms I can use, and I’ve reached it, so adding any more keywords means removing others.
One day I’d like to move to a programatic solution, but I’m not much of a coder, so a bunch more learning would be required…

Question for folks here on #SocialBC (or anyone following the BC local news bots):
Do you find the duplication of posts across multiple bots annoying? I’m trying to decide whether to just outright block Black Press owned news outlets due to the way they blast out news stories across their many properties. Blocking them outright will result in some legitimate local news stories going unseen, but is that a price worth paying to stop results like the below?:

More good news today! According to Fedidb.com, #SocialBC has re-reached and surpassed its initial monthly active user count from a year ago.
We're now at a tiny but mighty 67! Total number of accounts is 163, up from 102 a year ago.
We're up 20 users from January, so it's been a good start to the year.
(note that fedidb erroneously lists our servers as still being in Portugal, even though we have moved to Vancouver. Not sure when it will update)

All SocialBC users are encouraged to participate. Message me for your personal link to the poll. It will end April 15.

This year’s Herring Spawn at Salmon Beach in Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ territory is featured in a NASA article!
https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/satellite-spots-a-spawn/
The picture is of Barkley Sound, on Vancouver Island. It is part of the territories of many Nuuchanulth and Maanulth nations at the mouth of Alberni Inlet.
Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ was anglicized to “Ucluelet”: the name of the nearby town, and companion to Tofino at each end of the Pacific Rim National Park.
I need to add the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ logo to #socialbc!

We’ll be putting out a #SocialBC email and announcement next week for exciting plans to come! Look for it in your inbox, on the Announcements on the front page and I’ll post it as a thread as well.
Stay tuned and have a wonderful first weekend of spring! Beautiful here in traditional un-ceded Tseshaht :TseshahtFN: and Hupacasath :hupacasath: territories!
Time for some outside time! The rhodo is waking up!
