📖 Against Tech Oligarchy by JS Tan & Clarissa Redwine (★★★★★) #politics #nonfiction #socialscience
As tech bosses fall in line with the right, tech workers are fighting back. This is the rousing inside story of their movement—and the way it spawned an anti-worker backlash now reshaping the industry. After Donald Trump’s election in 2016, the tech industry sprang into action to oppose his right-wing agenda, with...

“ #Marriage may be becoming a more selective institution. Couples who move in together and discover that the relationship does not work can separate without ever #marrying. Those who stay together and eventually #marry are, my research shows, the #couples who are happiest," said CPC member Brienna Perelli-Harris, Professor of #Demography at the University of #Southampton in yesterday's The Guardian.

AI is reshaping journalism - but what does that mean for democracy?
In a new #WJDS essay, Weizenbaum director Christoph Neuberger examines AI’s role in producing reliable knowledge and shaping public opinion. AI can support truth-seeking, but its lack of transparency limits collective scrutiny. The essay also explores risks and opportunities for democratic deliberation.

Measuring Culture: Universality and Identity Politics by John W. Mohr, 2020
Social scientists seek to develop systematic ways to understand how people make meaning and how the meanings they make shape them and the world in which they live. But how do we measure such processes? Measuring Culture is an essential point of entry for both those new to the field and those who are deeply immersed in the measurement of meaning.

TITLE: Studies May Promise Anonymity, But the Promise Is Often Broken
Source: Science
Economist Abel Brodeur was leading a group of colleagues examining a survey-research study when they noticed something that stunned them. Its data set, available in a public repository, contained names of people who had admitted to crimes and identified their accomplices, information never provided to police. This broken promise of anonymity, it turns out, was far from an isolated case, according to a new study released last week.

If it sounds crazy, maybe it really is. Here the craziness is expecting LLMs to behave like survey respondents.
"Scientists and practitioners are aggressively moving to deploy digital twins—large language model (LLM)-based models of individuals—across social science and policy research. We conducted 19 preregistered studies with 164 diverse outcomes (e.g., attitudes toward hiring algorithms and intention to share misinformation) and compared human responses with those of their digital twins (trained on each person’s previous answers to more than 500 questions). We establish an empirical benchmark for digital twin performance: Digital twins’ answers are only modestly more accurate than those from the (homogeneous) base LLM and correlate weakly with human responses (average correlation coefficient of 0.20). To guide future development, we document five ways in which digital twins distort human behavior: (i) insufficient individuation, (ii) stereotyping, (iii) representation bias, (iv) ideological biases, and (v) hyper-rationality. We make our full dataset and code public as a standardized testbed. Our results caution against premature deployment while laying the groundwork for the transparent, replicable, and iterative science necessary for responsible deployment of digital twins."

BOOK REVIEW by Veronica Smith: Breaking Up with the Patriarchy by Susan L. Herrmann
Published in 2025 by Open Spiral (USA), Susan L. Herrmann’s ground-breaking book, ‘Breaking up with the Patriarchy‘ is the result of over thirty years of experience as an educator and therapist. Being her first book, Susan was guided through the process of compiling and editing by Laura B. Fox, who specialises in Mind Body Spirit publications. Susan’s book was then published through Laura’s imprint ‘Open Spiral’.
front cover of Susan L. Herrmann’s book, Breaking up with the PatriarchyThe foreword is written by Susan’s teacher, Four Arrows (Wahinkpe Topa) aka Don Trent Jacobs, who authored the Worldview Chart, which is an important reference point throughout the book.
So, what is the book about? Susan explains the concept of the ‘Patriarchy’, how it has become the dominant system in the world, centering on competition, exploitation, isolation and fear. Fear is the main form of its control, keeping us so afraid that we are unable to recognize and respond to what is happening around us. This system thinks in Linear Time, which puts us on an impossible time schedule with no time to rest and which inevitably leads to exhaustion and sickness.
In contrast, the much older Indigenous / Kinship worldview operates on the idea of cooperation, respect for Nature, and fearlessness. It thinks in cyclical time. As Susan says in Chapter 10, ‘In cyclic time, trauma becomes fertilizer. Not because suffering is good or necessary but because life is endlessly creative in forging new possibilities when things fall apart.‘
In Patriarchal linear time, we are told that rest is a luxury we cannot afford because we will miss our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reach certain goals within our age bracket. In Kinship cyclic time, we know that rest is essential for well-being and that opportunities will come around again, when we are better able to cope with them.
Back cover of Susan L. Herrmann’s book, Breaking up with the Patriarchy. From Fear to Fearlessness involves a change in our own mindsets, literally breaking up with the “truths” that the patriarchal system has been feeding us and our ancestors for generations. Before we can heal and change the world, we must first heal and change ourselves. In this book, Susan gives practical advice on the small steps we can take each day to change how we show up in the world, how we respond, how we perceive the world around us.
Susan writes as a friend, sharing her own personal story, as well as citing examples of situations she has witnessed with many of her clients, including Vietnamese survivors of Agent Orange.
This is a book worth reading, both for the questions that it raises and for the solutions that it suggests. Whether you follow the suggestions or not, is up to you.
‘Breaking up with the Patriarchy’ is available to order through Amazon worldwide, both as Kindle and as Paperback.
