@Geri @HighlandLawyer Thank you Geri, sincerely, for answering that. So it’s settled, Landlord is not an appropriate name for property professionals? Private equity for commercial rentals or private property rentals for individuals is the issue if no regulations, but now there are more for the later. No doubt the financial markets are infatuated with billionaires’ corporations, estates and investors like the unearned wealth of Duke of Westminster or the earned ones of the Candy brothers, Dyson, Murdoch and Branson etc. so we should expect more slum and drug riddled housing estates? Hereditary peers have just been superseded by oligarchs, and plutocrats but the monarchy is exempt. Hence, if I have not erred, all that’s left is to abolish the crony quangos, bribery and lobbying of antitrust monopolies. The point being, none should have to worry or fear the rise of those like Mr. Frog’s and his fascist financiers! #Antitrust #monopolies #rentalbusiness #property #professionals #socialhousing #billionaires

#AlanKohler is on board with Govt doing the job of building #SocialHousing as it cuts through a number of walls that seem intent on making sure Australia will never have enough houses to meet the needs of its population at an affordable cost/price.
“Like the NDIS (and child care), housing affordability is unsustainable and can't be left to be a by-product of monetary policy, the productivity and profitability of the building industry and the zoning vagaries of local councils.
And as with the NDIS (and child care), intergenerational fairness requires a radical solution: the government could do worse than going back to building some houses.” (Source: ABC News)

@InsurgoFormica
We’ve seen them come and go… what’s changed? Nada. I see real estate pricing fluctuation as market manipulation and insider trading… all of it is speculative and reserved for the rich.Remember that house ownership is a financialised asset that underwrites the banking system in Australia. Those assets cannot be allowed to lose value lest the system collapses. Fluctuations in value on the other hand allows for profit taking and buying on the down side if it is ‘managed’ within strict boundaries. Think of it as a sinewave along an ever increasing asset value. It’s fully rigged IMO.
The answer: real social housing built and funded by public funds on a not for profit basis — sorry to say it will never happen kiddos.

This is hitting too close to home to feel complacent about the lack of #SocialHousing
“An Indigenous woman, living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, gave birth to twins in a tent. One of those babies died. In a tent. Where their parents were living, because the waiting list for social housing in their area is up to seven years. The Sydney Morning Herald’s Amber Schultz has reported nearly 700 people are on the social housing waitlist in Wagga Wagga, a city with fewer than 70,000 residents.” (Source: https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/politics/australian-politics/2026/05/06/baby-tent-housing-interest-rates )
One in a Hundred without a decent roof over their heads. Think about that as if one of them was you.
If the federal Govt is inept at solving the #HousingCrisis problem in the #Riverina electorate, then let’s elect a representative who will push an inept #NSW #Labor govt to step into the breach. And while we’re at it, let’s make sure the local #Councillors we elect to the #WaggaWaggaCouncil also have #Housing front and centre on their mind.
We can be better than this folks. We don’t have to put up with the crap we’re given by those love-sick on power at any cost. Think about our community, the whole of our community when you vote next time in #Federal or #State #elections. This is not about you or me, it’s about all of us in the Riverina. Safe housing, free healthcare, and social services delivery must be foremost on our minds. The other things that are making our lives miserable we can overcome once we’re all safely housed and in better shape to do somthing about them. Because of course we must, all of us, do something about them too.

CW: Auspol, Housing
Non-profit coop housing has been working for decades in Europe. It is no different from good govt social housing , also working well in Europe for decades (I spent my early years there in social housing in the late 50s early 60s). Long term agreements in some schems are also decades long and a few are no different from home ownership passed on to kids.
It’s all doable, cost effective, socially responsible and a godsend to low wage workers and those who can least afford housing (there is still the issue of waiting lists because there’s never enough …)
Current housing issues in Australia, just like poverty in Australia IS A POLITICAL DECISION. The sooner the electorate understands this, the sooner we can fix it at the ballot box.

Yep, all you’ve said and maybe more to it. If you recall reading the article, the conclusion drawn was that if you wish to deal effectively with the #HousingCrisis in Australia the only sure way to do it is to take it out of private hands. Social Housing should and ought to be a public run thing (at a loss if needs be) because housing is a human right IMO.And any politician who retorts that govts shouldn’t be in the housing business tells all you need to know about the individual and his opinions.

Building social housing is a winning strategy. I know the Canadian Greens would do this, but they haven't much hope of getting near power. The #NDP might under new leader @avilewis . What else is going to make housing affordable? The market has failed.
