  1. “It’s not just politics. It’s personal.”

My novel Christina’s Portrait will be published by Wordhaven Press in November. I will describe my book in this series of posts. You can read other posts in the Christina’s Portrait category on my website. Also subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok to learn more about the book.

A great editor doesn’t just show you how to improve your manuscript. They can help you see things from a new perspective. In this case, it’s politics.

In her developmental edit of Christina’s Portrait, Kathy Bosman made this comment: “Maybe mention here or later why [this character] hates Trump so much. Esp. for non-US readers.” As an American who gets bombarded by the president’s follies every day on the news and social media, I assumed that everyone knows what he does and how it affects us. But Kathy lives in South Africa, so US news is more in the background. But readers years from now (or even today) might forget what happened during the pandemic and how Trump’s actions would anger someone like my character. That anger couldn’t come from some detailed analysis of his policies. It had to be personal.

As I developed the character’s personal aversion to Trump, it made me realize that all politics is personal.

I think back to 1980 when I voted for Ronald Reagan in my first presidential election. When his policies started affecting me and my family, not only did I turn against Reagan, I never voted for a Republican candidate for president ever again. And if you look at how Trump’s policies have hurt so many people—immigrant families who have had loved ones unjustly detained, truckers who can’t afford diesel, young people who are forced to decide between food or rent, and so many others—Republicans not only stand to lose the midterms, they may be unelectable for generations to come.

It also shows why people who voted for Trump in three elections are finally turning away from him. Some may sneer, “You voted for him even though he launched an insurrection, was found guilty as an adjudicated rapist, and sold out our country to our enemies. But you only turned away when gas started costing you $4.50 a gallon?” Even people with functioning empathies and glimpses past their chosen media echo chamber comfort themselves with denial, the belief they still did the right thing, and the hope things will work out eventually. That’s until reality becomes too great to brush aside.

It also shows why people cling to him until the very end. They’ve invested so much of their identity in him. They see him as a religious figure. They depleted their bank accounts buying his merch and traveling to his rallies. They broke relationships, estranged family members, and faced community rejection for mimicking his hateful acts. And when he’s gone (and he will go someday), they won’t know what to do with themselves. Their fear of not having Donald Trump as a foundation of their lives is greater than any personal losses they’ll suffer from his policies.

Understanding that politics is personal also helps those who want to make positive changes in society.

The reason why Major Zohran Mamdani is so successful is he makes immediate improvements that benefit ordinary New Yorkers. Abdul El-Sayed connects with Michigan voters because he addresses the issues they care about the most. When people are suffering, they don’t care about ideological labels or a person’s name. They just want someone who can make their lives better.

We need to meet people where they are, whether we’re a politician running for office or an author with a book to sell. When it comes to politics, it isn’t about detailed position papers and ideological stances. It’s about people’s real hopes and fears. All politics is personal.

  12. Book Review: The Beginning Comes After the End by Rebecca Solnit

    Author: Rebecca Solnit
Title: The Beginning Comes After the End
    Publication Info: Haymarket Books (2026)
Other Books Read by This Author:

    Summary/Review:

The Beginning Comes After the End is a balm in a time of rising authoritarianism, supremacist movements, environmental degradation, and climate crises.  While this collection of essays is a work of hope, I think it would be wrong to characterize it as blindly optimistic.  Solnit reminds us of the real gains made since World War II in movements for civil rights and liberation, environmentalism, and indigenous repatriation.  The movements of the past and their interconnections serve as examples of the world being changed for the better.  And while destructive forces are now intent on destroying these gains, it helps to remember that their backlash is rooted in their belief that these things they hate are powerful and world-changing.  Solnit’s work offers a vision that points us back toward that better world.

    Favorite Passages:

Only in the long view can you see the patterns emerging, the way the present builds on the past, the way past surprises guarantee more surprises are coming, the ingredients of change over years, decades, centuries. If you don’t see time on the scale of change, you don’t see change.

The assumption is that we might be at the end of something, even the end of time, for those fond of apocalypse and doom, but we couldn’t possibly be at the beginning of something else. We assume that the present is not in labor to bring forward a future unlike itself. And it is easier to see the old world dying, than the new world being born

Ideas have power, and while those who support them often dismiss that power, those who fear them recognize they can change the world . . . Ideas are seeds in that they are beginnings; if they succeed, they do so as they take on more tangible and concrete forms

The fact that we cannot save everything does not mean that we cannot save anything and everything we can save is worth saving.

  13. A quotation from Mark Twain

Inherited ideas are a curious thing, and interesting to observe and examine. I had mine, the king and his people had theirs. In both cases they flowed in ruts worn deep by time and habit, and the man who should have proposed to divert them by reason and argument would have had a long contract on his hands.

  16. Dealing with #mainstreaming people is exhausting - not because most have bad intentions, but because decades of life inside a #deathcult system leave us carrying habits of fear, distrust and learned helplessness.

We need better social ways to mediate this mess: compassion, yes, but also clarity, boundaries and collective care.

    That's part of the work of #OMN, the #openweb and the #4opens. #NothingNew #SocialChange

Perfectly understandable. There is a lot of terrible things happening in the world, and having any form of justice sensitivity can make any exposure to it downright maddening. I know.

If you're interested in how I reconcile preferring to be kind and positive with this, the upshot is that for me it comes from understanding the complexities of the situation. Not the details necessarily, I easily get overwhelmed from those. But instead the patterns and underlying systems that have led to our current situation, continue to fuel it, but yet understanding them suggests pathways to help deal with them. I've found that with this information, I am far more charitable regarding people's involvement in these patterns, as well as hopeful about the ways out of them.

If you (by which I mean anyone reading this) is interested in learning these things, you can take a look at them at the following web address. There's a lot there, so if you don't have the time and energy for it all, that is why I have the 'quick' version which is called the Bare Essentials level, bite-sized lessons in the various topics. If even that might be too much, or you prefer or need to begin with information more relevant to this discussion, I'd suggest starting at the Level 2 topic of Community & Cooperation, and then moving on to the Level 3 topics, to really see what I mean above, but really you can look at whatever you want in whatever order. But also keep in mind that all the topics are designed to support and reinforce each other, so the more you learn, the better you will understand and appreciate the other topics as well.

And I'm always available for questions, comments, or even suggestions. :BlobCatSmiley:

Watching this video reminded me how much activist history gets distorted by sectarianism.

At places like #Greenham, divisions formed around the "colour" of the gates - different ideologies, identities, and political cultures. The trouble is that the loudest and most conflict-driven voices end up telling the history afterwards.

The people saying *"look at me"* get remembered, while the people saying *"don't look at me, I'm busy, look at the issue"* are usually too busy doing the actual work to document it.

This leaves us with a skewed activist memory, where internal drama becomes history and the slow, collective labour that made things happen fades into the background.

It's not just a problem of the past. We keep reproducing the same mess today.

  21. Every time someone shares an article about how terrible the world is, my first question is simple - What are you doing about it?

Outrage without action is another form of consumption, doomscrolling isn't organising, sharing isn't building, knowing isn't enough.

The world won't change because we comment on the mess. It changes when we create alternatives, challenge power, and work together to build something better.
