@DaveWhittle I did respond when I saw this. I disagree. I know I'm from the era of the fortunate few who were able to travel overland to India & widen my horizons along the way. I returned to pursue my post-grad studies in #Soc_Anth, like many others. A tradition that continues to this day at #SOAS, the #L.S.E and other places of learning. Plus a side interest in the 'History of Mathematics'. Sometimes even the #Guardian gets it wrong!

We've launched an indicative ballot on taking strike action at SOAS, University of London over fire and rehire plans that place 34 staff at risk of losing their jobs and being rehired on worse terms and conditions. The cuts would eliminate all term-time English-language and study skills support for international students.
The cuts come despite SOAS's own figures show it made a surplus of £12.8m last year.

In this introductory lecture “Memoirs, Memories & Personal Histories” at a #SOAS conference about the Jewish community of #Iraq, the two aspects of Avi Shlaim's academic and personal life come together.
He briefly touches on what he calls “cruel Zionism” — that is, Israel’s activities to co-opt and conscript Jews from around the world into a project they never wished to be part of, and the price paid by both Palestinians and Jews as a result.

Next was an essential panel on #CSR and law in #Africa at #SOAS University of London with Nojeem Amodu, Olufemi Amao, Misbau Alamu Lateef, Ibukun Omisore, and Emilia Onyema. This is probably the most comprehensive view of CSR that I've seen from an African perspective, and given that multinationals by definition operate globally this is an absolute must-watch for people in corporate governance and management. UCU members at SOAS have today opened their payslips to find 100% pay deductions. This is utterly appalling behaviour from university management. They have attacked staff and dragged their reputation through the mud instead of calling on their representatives at UCEA to re-negotiate.
